When I restart my computer Grey screen with restart message

My computer was running slow. I had not shut it down for several days. I went to shut it down and it gave me a grey screen with the spinning wheel. This lasted for a few hours. I then used the power button to shut down the computer. When I restarted, It showed a grey screen I hear one start-up chime and then some (DOS Language) in the background with a black box in the foreground stating I had to restart My computer by holding down the power key until it shuts off and then restart by pressing the power key once again. Sorry for the run on sentence. I tried this several times, Shut down and restart, all with the same results. Any suggestions.

Thank you guys for your comments and suggestions. I am away from home and will take a few days to try out your ideas. I just wanted to let you know I got your messages and wanted to thank you. I will post the results when I can get up with my reboot disk.

This is called a "Kernel Panic". It means that the operating system found a condition where it can't go any further. Could be hardware or software related.

Try starting up the computer from the installation medium (CD or thumpdrive) and either try installing new from scratch, or repair the disk via "Disk Utilities", found on the second screen in the Utilities menu.

If you still getting a Kernel Panic when booting from an external medium it might be a hardware failure.

Please report your findings.

I would remove and reinstall the memory--thats what I usually find causing kernel panics. +

You're right rj - but on a MacBook Air the RAM is not changeble but soldered on to the logicboard. In that case - bummer.
