Sreen won't turn on after phone was dropped but not cracked

My wife dropped her phone and afterward the screen just stayed black. Screen is not cracked and has no visible sign of external damage.

The phone is still working, the alarm still went off every day with no way to turn it off until the battery died. Tried charging, restarting but no change. Then removed the screen, detached and re-attached the screen connector but that also did not help.

Does anybody know if a screen replacement would fix it? Or is it something with the motherboard and there's no video output to the screen? I see no damage to the screen itself.

Is there a way to test what's broken without a functional screen? I know USB debugging requires a screen confirmation so can't do that:(

Update: I have not repaired the phone so I never found out what the problem was. I decided it's not worth it to spend $100 on a screen which might not fix the problem when the newer version of the phone is only $300. So my wife got a Pixel 6a. Still have the phone sitting in the garage, can't get myself to throw a potentially repairable phone. Thank you all for your suggestions and comments!

It sounds to me like the video cable may have come unplugged. If there is no image at all, that would be my 1st guess.

Another thing to check: it might. be the LCD backlight. To test, You can shine a bright light at the screen. If you see a faint image it might be the backlight is failed (or unplugged). In either case you would need to disassemble & reconnect the cable.

Thanks iknowaguy2010,

I disassembled the phone and checked the one cable I can see connecting the screen to the rest of the phone. After detaching and firmly re-attaching I still have a black screen:(

Thanks for your answer nevertheless!!

did you ever get it fixed, i had a similar situation happened to me dropped it like a few feet to a rubberish floor, and the screen is all black, but i can still feel it vibrate, and can radomly turn on the flashlight.

i dropped in a similar manner a couple other times, but it never turned the screen off like this, this one might be wierd because it did drop at an odd angle, it hit a cart/trolley on the way down.

My phone also just died in a similar manner. Screen went black, and refuses to turn on. I'm able to feel the phone vibrate when I call it or send it a text message. Not sure if it's the motherboard or the screen. Anyone have any insight into this? I didn't want to buy the screen for $100, perform the replacement, and figure out it was something else.

This happened to me twice. My screen went black after I dropped it. No cracking of the screen. Phone still worked as described above. I tried replacing the screen. The first time I replaced it it worked fine for a few months. Then It went black out of nowhere. Replacing the screen a second time did not fix it. If anyone has any ideas on this, I would appreciate it.

Does anyone know if I could swap components from one motherboard to a new one? I was quoted $700 minimum to get the data off of it.

I don't know exactly what's wrong with it but I hope that helps.
