iPod No Power On and Not Recognized by Computer

Hello iFixit,

After using other's iPods for such a while, I decided to pick up an iPod touch 3rd gen 32GB. I love fixing things and tearing things apart, so I've got the heart to do it. But this iPod happens to have a big issue. No power at all. The digitalizer is cracked, and it appears that the LCD has some pressure damage. When hooked up via USB with a known good cable and known good USB port (because it charges a friend's iPod), it does nothing. The mac doesn't see it at all, and the screen doesn't show the fantist sight of life. I tore it down in 30 minutes thanks to the excellent tutorial on this site. The back-plate is really bad, so I'm replacing it. The LCD and digitalizer are probably going to be replaced to after I determine what is wrong. I must thank oldturkey for the link to that website.

Continuing, I am unsure what to do next. I am thinking I need to get a multimeter and get the voltages off of the battery to see if it is dead. Or, I need to hook it back up via USB and then read the voltages off of the mainboard, although I am unsure where I would do that.

EDIT JULY 23rd: I ended up selling this since. I tried soldering the battery, rather desoldering, and I couldn't get it. I bought an iPhone 3gs with water damage instead.

Corry, the first thing I would do is to replace the battery. With all the stuff you are going to replace it stands to reason that you need a new one. After that take a look at the dock connector. Check for bend, broken, and corroded pins. Also clean your logic board and dock connector with isopropyl alcohol, just like you would for water damage. If your computer does not recognize the iPod and it does not charge, it all points to the dock connector. When you have it connected via USB cable, take a measurement at the battery points you should at least get around 3V on there.

Alrighty, I'll order a battery from eBay and hopefully it will get here soon. I've soldered once before, and it was for large battery connections for an RC car. I think I can do this. I'll also grab some desoldering wick from radio shack if they have it.

Sounds good, also try to practice soldering on some old circuit boards first. You have to make sure you do not run into problems with the solder pads on the logic board. Do a quick search on here and see the issues that people have with that....anyhow, good luck to you.

I took a good look again at that battery that is in it now. I noticed the negative terminal wasn't down all the way. It was also a little offset. So I resoldered the negative terminal, and tried powering on with no volume or power flex cable. Didn't work, computer didn't see it. Oh well.

Could it boot anyway without that? Also, could grounding have anything to do with it? I just put the MB in the tray real well and then plugged it in.

I have tested just the mainboard (no wifi/digitizer flex cable) outside the back case, it booted and was seen by PC, so it will work with just the board.

Make sure to use 92% or higher alcohol. Some stores sell watered down 50% that will damage electronics.

Thought I'd mention that the Ipod not only needs to be powered on but also needs to go through some diagnostics before it will attempt to connect to computer. So, if it doesn't power on it will NOT be identified by computer. Get it to power up first, then worry about connections to computer.

I have an ipod touch 2g given to me by a friend. Says he sent it in and the logic board is bad. Tore it down and cannot see anything wrong with it (no blown parts, etc). The most Ive seen is a bit of heat distortion on the smallest chip under the back EMF shield (under the speaker)...

Should I try these steps?? Also, I am not sure of the battery. according to him he plugged it in 2 weeks ago and it just kind of fizzled and died...
