How can I best upgrade my existing 2-slot RAM chips?

I would like to increase my Mini Mac's RAM from 1GB to 2GB. It currently has two slots, each with a 512MB RAM chip.

Does it matter if I: 1) replace one of the chips with a 2GB chip (for a total of 2.5); 2) replace both chips with 1GB each; or 3) replace both chips with a single 2GB chip. Any suggestions?

Some of the A1176 models will take up to 4 GB of RAM so we need to know your EXACT model. Please give us the last three figures of your serial number. The RAM is NOT installed in pairs. I'll finish this answer after I know your machines max.

? RAM should be installed in pairs or the machine will suffer true performance set backs.

Click here for a reference. Officially this only supports 2GB of memory. However, the ability for this particular machine to handle 4GB of memory is well documented. With the price of memory and for best performance. I suggest you install matching 2GB memory sticks, 1 into each slot - for a total of 4GB of memory.

First, welcome to the iFixit community Sharon.

Ram is pretty inexpensive. I would visit crucial.com and select your model from their easy drop-down lists. The site will tell you the maximum amount of ram the system supports. On the mini, as mayer states, some will support 4GB.

If your model supports 2GB or 4GB, I would definitely just max it out and be done with it vs having to tear down the mini later.

I still have several 512GB chips that I've pulled from various mac mini's and Apple Laptops that I keep around. They aren't worth anything, so I just throw them in older Windows laptops for customers at no charge on many occasions.

All the members in the community are volunteers here to help with your computing questions. Again, welcome!

If I understood right you Mac accepts max 2GB of RAM. So actually it doesn't really matter if you put 1 + 1 or 2 in total. I would suggest you to look at the prices. If you can get 2 x 1 GB RAM cheaper than 1 x 2GB RAM I would say go for it.
