Keyboard & trackpad not working after display removal

Hey gang, total beginner here but having fun learning. So, I "decapitated" a spare 13" M2 Macbook Air to use as a "slab book" with my Vision Pro. And by decapitate I mean I removed the display per the guide HERE

It worked great, was super portable and I can AirPlay to TVs, my Vision Pro, etc. After tinkering, I reassembled everything (minus the display) and now the following is happening:

  1. The M2 Air boots and connects to an external display via USB-C
  2. Keyboard does not register clicks at login or any screen.
  3. Trackpad doesn't register.
  4. Nor does "force touch" seem to be in effect on the trackpad. There's no "click" feeling.
  5. After about 5-10 seconds, the unit goes to sleep.

I've double-checked all the connections inside and everything that I disconnected during the display removal was reconnected, minus the display ribbon (since it's a headless Macbook Air now).

Any thoughts on what might be causing the listed issues above? I'm slightly suspicious of the Lid Angle Sensor possible getting damaged, but would that explain the keyboard & the trackpad not clicking or registering and the unit sleeping after 5-10 seconds?

Thanks so much!

UPDATE: I decided to try removing the Lid Angle Sensor and this seemed to solve the problem. Somehow the Lid Angle Sensor was preventing the keyboard and trackpad from working, and my guess is that it thought it was shut. Since the Macbook Air has no display, no need for a Lid Angle Sensor.

Unfortunately, a new problem has arisen: it no longer loads to the log in screen and instead shows my system wallpaper but no choice to log in.

Sorry at this point I think you need to reconnect the display to see if the issues are resolved.

The issue is Apple uses a collection of sensors and data signals as health monitoring via SMC logic. When you alter things as drastically as removing the display things can break!

The issue persisted when I reconnected the display and when I left it headless. Neither make a difference.

Connecting via USB-C to an external display also has the same effect, even with an external keyboard and mouse.

Boots. Log in screen. No keyboard inputs work & can't move mouse cursor or type login password. After 10 seconds or so it goes to sleep.

@gnawbert - Did you reset SMC? You need to do that as it’s likely in the latched state.

@danj I tried that a few times but it didn't work. It did take me to the startup screen with Macintosh HD on the left and Options on the right, but like before the keyboard doesn't register clicks, the mouse doesn't track, and if I try to click the trackpad the force touch is stiff and doesn't give feedback.

Interestingly, external keyboards and mice now DO work when it's in that boot screen with Macintosh HD on the left and Options on the right. They previously didn't work.

How would I verify if the SMC reset actually occured?

@gnawbert - you may need to use an external USB keyboard and mouse or Bluetooth connected.

@danj I just tried that both external keyboards and mice. Oddly, they don't work when I get to the standard Log In screen, but do work when I get to the startup screen with the HD on the left. Still not sure if the SMC reset is doing anything via the external keyboard.
