Model Number A1707. Released June 2017, this MacBook Pro features Kaby Lake processors up to the 2.8 GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor with Turbo Boost up to 3.8 GHz.

Won't turn on after reassembling

I bought this second hand and it was working fine: turned it on, reinstalled the system, restored TimeMachine, charged the battery…

But it was filthy. Used-in-a-barn filthy!

So I opened it up, cleaned everything, reassembled and… nothing happened… it just won't turn on…

I triple-checked all the connectors, tried re-setting the SMC, put some tape unde the battery screw (saw this here on ifixit) and still nothing. No water-based products were used, isopropyl alcohol only!

This is the first 'modern' Macbook I ever worked on. Previously I done up to 2015 only so I am lost in regards to troubleshooting it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

EDIT: I remembered I did break one thing - the flat cable of one of the fans when I was cleaning it. I did soldered it back and it did got about 2mm shorted and I couldn't test it but I assume if it weren't working that wouldn't be a reason for the computer not to turn on…?

Breaking and then soldering back a flat cable, especially one associated with a fan, could indeed be related to why your MacBook Pro isn't turning on.

It may be because of short circuit, component recognition. If the fan cable is damaged or not properly connected, it could trigger thermal protection mechanisms that prevent the computer from starting to avoid overheating.

Your soldering job might indeed be the root of the issue, especially if it was not perfectly executed or if it resulted in a short circuit. Addressing these specific areas should help you determine if the fan cable issue is the cause of the MacBook's failure to turn on.

Well as unlikely that this is I do agree there's a chance, that's why I edited my post.

However how could that be? Is there a major difference from previous models, like the 2015 15"? Cause on previous models the fan wouldn't work but the computer would turn on.

So if I remove that fan to make sure that is indeed the issue would the computer turn back on or would it still remain 'dead'?

The 2017 MacBook Pro’s cooling system is more integrated and may have stricter requirements for operational components, like fans. If the fan or its connection is faulty, it might prevent the system from booting. Testing by removing the fan can help identify if it’s the cause, but ensure to handle the MacBook carefully to avoid overheating.

@carlosferrari - Time to replace the fan and hope your patch didn’t short out the circuit.
