Uncommon "the disc could not be read" problem PSP 2001 - not the usual

Hello, I am experiencing a strange issue where UMDs can only be read after a fresh firmware install. I’ve gone through all the troubleshooting guides I could find online and browsed the sub for similar problems, but I couldn’t find anything like this.

The laser seems to be working—it moves back and forth, as well as up and down. The discs spin fine initially, but I noticed that after the error appears once, the disc won’t spin again unless I completely shut the system off and turn it back on. Occasionally, if I remove the battery for a minute or two, it will read the games.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

Hi there!

Do you have any error codes? Or is it only displaying "The disc could not be read"? It's not a sensor thing, as it wouldn't recognize the disc at start. I'm thinking it's on motherboard level as it does read it after a firmware update. Is the PSP modded? Which firmware version is installed at the moment? Thanks in advance!

No error codes just "disc could not be read" The PSP is modded now (as of 2 days ago) I did it just to see if that would make any difference, but it didn't. Before the mod, it was on stock firmware 6.61 and the error and behavior was the same. I'm pretty handy and have all the necessary tools to work on the motherboard if you think there's something on it faulty.

Alright. Not sure which part... There is nothing to find about this. I would replace the motherboard completely. It's more expensive, but would try this first (maybe you can buy a PSP with a broken shell or something, and get the motherboard from that one). Just to try. If that failed, then it's the laser or any other small part from the UMD drive. Sorry.
