Repair and disassembly information for Google's Pixel 7 Pro smartphone, released in October 2022. Identified by model number GP4BC and GE2AE.

Screen only displays image when pressing firmly at the bottom

Hello,

I replaced a cracked screen on my wife's Pixel 7 Pro back in November 2023 using the official kit and repair guide posted here. Everything worked great until yesterday, when it started exhibiting some strange behavior.

The screen still registers touches properly, but it does not display anything unless I press and hold firmly on the area directly above the charging port. If I hold it down for long enough, it will sometimes display properly for a few minutes, but eventually it always goes back to the same state. It also emits a green pulsing flicker when I plug it in to charge, which lasts for a few seconds until the screen goes to sleep. I can press the power button to wake it back up and repeat the green flicker.

Has anyone seen an issue like this before? If so, can you suggest any steps to try before I crack the seal and open the phone back up to investigate further? I'm guessing it's either a complete display failure, a loose display cable connection (although I triple-checked that sucker before I sealed it up for the previous repair), or a charging port failure. I have already tried restarting the device, removing the phone case, putting it in a cooler environment for a while, manually discharging any static electricity that might be present, rebooting into safe mode, and ensuring all system updates are current, but nothing has made a difference.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Kevin,

The symptoms you describe sound like a connector issue. Since the connection to the motherboard is halfway up the side of the phone, I'd say it's the other end that's having problems. Unfortunately, the connections to the glass itself are pretty much non-repairable, so chances are you're looking at needing to replace the screen again.

The good news here is that iFixit screens have a lifetime warranty and a failure that's not due to physical damage should be covered. My suggestion would be to go ahead and contact the iFixit Store personnel and let them know what's going on. Assuming they agree it should be covered, they'll send you a brand new replacement kit the same as your original purchase. Best way I know of contacting them is via email at support@ifixit.com.
