Whirlpool traditional top loader washing machine with agitator.

Whirlpool LSQ8520JQ0 doesn't spin unless manually spun

Model: LSQ8520JQ0

Hi everyone, I've been having this issue on and off for a few months now where my clothes are completely soaked after their wash.

Today I put up a stick to hold the lid up to take a peek inside while it runs. The agitator works. It started to spin for a few seconds during the first spin cycle, but then it stopped. It didn't spin when the high spin cycle started unless I manually started to spin it with my hand. After it was done I decided to try manually putting it back to the high spin cycle and it spun on its own.

Then I ran my second load. It spun on its own during the first drain cycle and during the high spin cycle. Just like normal.

Anyone know why? Thanks!

Hi Belt, there's a good chance your washer's clutch is wearing out. The clutch helps the motor & transmission to spin the tub, allowing it to gradually build up speed as the spin cycle starts. Here's a video I found that shows how to replace a clutch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RS1l6t8.... If you'd like to verify the clutch is actually the problem before ordering a new one, follow the video instructions as far as removing the transmission, and look at the clutch parts. If there is a lot of black dust in the clutch it means the brake parts are wearing out and you'll need a new one. A quick internet search like "Whirlpool LSQ8520JQ0 washer parts" should give several options for finding a new clutch.
