Guides and repair information for Hoover vacuum cleaners.

New belt and brush roller won't run properly.

Have a Hoover Wind Tunnel Upright (w/bag), Model #:  U6485900

With Brush Roll on/off suction: Hoover part #: 562289001, ask for Flat Belt

Here is the problem:

The carpet brush showed all the signs of needing to be replaced. The brush would activate when I lowered the handle, but it would not rotate strong enough when it touched the carpet. When I slide the carpet height lever to 'low' it would spin fine. But when I slid it down a notch or two it would basically stop spinning.

Motor suction is fine.

I replace the belt with the above part# and with another universal belt and both belts have same results.

The roller is still doing the same thing.

Do I have the correct belt # for this model. (I got this # right out of my Hoover manual)

The new belt is the same length as the original one.

It is not a rubber looking belt. It looks more like a plastic belt.

When I replace it the correct way, it is loose feeling.

When I lower the handle, it tighten only very slightly.

In my opinion, not enough to make the roller spin against the carpet though.

Any thoughts on why this is not working still before I have to pay more to bring it to a repair person to try and tell me.??

Thanks in advance,

Hi there, and thanks for the quick response.

Yes, I made sure the roller and it's side bearings are all free of dust and hair as you mentioned.

What's funny is that when it is not touching the carpet, the brush spins just fine and a good speed.

It's only when it touches the carpet that is slows right down.

Is it possible for the motor to lose power like that? Upon meeting resistance from rug contact?

Would you know of any videos for taking vacuum apart and motor replacement or ballpark cost for a new motor?

thanks in advance, It is appreciated. Been working on this for weeks now and didn't really want to spend $300+ on a new vacuum.

Vacuum is only about 4 years old now. Seems too early to be going bad? Doesn't really get used that much I didn't think.

Thanks again.

Hello,

If you know for a fact that you used the right belt from the manual and put it on correctly, unclogged anything caught in the rollers, and the back isn't full and the suction is good then it sounds like the problem is with the tension on the belt, or the motor. It sounds like as soon as the brushes touch the carpet and get some actual resistance they want to stop. This sounds like an issue with the motor either being too weak or not driving the belt in order to turn the brushes. Here is a link that you might find helpful just to see what I am refering too:
