Coffee spilled on MacBook Air 13"

Some five days ago (June 4th), I spilled a coffee cup on my Macbook Air 13" (1.8 GHz, Mid 2011) keyboard and its shut off immediately (11am). After 6 hour of drying with AC conditioner (17pm), the MBA turn on and no problem with the system, because I worked with it.

However, at night (21pm), when charge is off, I put the charger and the indicator light charger was not orange (like discharged), but green (like charged). Well, now (June 8th) I think that my MBA does not recognize the battery, because the charger light in green is kept. I believe the only water damage was on battery.

I would like to know how to evaluate the real state of my MBA, before sending to technical service (very expensive) and I would like to know if I could repair myself.

In advance, thank you very much.

Guillermo

Before you do anything else with the computer, clean the motherboard to prevent additional damage down the line. The board will need to be removed and either cleaned with a lot of high concentration alcohol and a brush (preferably antistatic) with 99% isopropyl alcohol being preferred. An ultrasonic cleaner with the proper cleaning fluid like Branson-EC is preferred if you have the option. Refer to This wiki to get instructions on how to clean the board.

If you see any corrosion by a BGA IC, use an ultrasonic cleaner to err on the side of caution so you know there is nothing under these chips to cause problems. If you damage these by not cleaning under them, you will need to replace them and this may get expensive to repair after the fact.

In terms of components you need to replace, the battery and keyboard (or palmrest, depending on how patient you are) should be replaced. Keyboards do not tend to survive, so it’s better to replace it as a cautionary repair. The battery is an internal exposed soft cell pack, so there is a high risk of cell and BMS damage that may not end well.

The guides you need to open the machine with are below, other then the keyboard (and potentially some other guides). You will also need to replace the thermal paste, so purchase this before you reassemble the notebook. You can find this in most electronics stores or Amazon. I usually use Artic MX-4, but any quality paste will work. You can find it on iFixit as well if you want to buy everything at once in one purchase.

You will need the following tools to open the notebook:

Refer to these guides to work on the laptop:

Once you finish cleaning the board, it’s best to reset the SMC and PRAM while you’re there to mitigate any SMC/PRAM problems that will be annoying to deal with later. The MBA is a "sealed" machine, so the reset procedure is different from removable battery systems. The procedure per Apple on these is as follows:

  • Shut down the computer.
  • Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
  • On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
  • Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
  • Press the power button to turn on the computer.
  • Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

Once the SMC is reset, deal with the PRAM.

  • Press Command, Option, P+R at the same time before it boots. The machine will restart if done correctly.

If you need better instructions on these resets, read this.
