Hi, I am having trouble with my MacBook. I have not attempted to fix this in case I broke it.
The issue is that the screen sometimes switches on, sometimes it does and sometimes it only has half the screen as a stripe goes across the bottom half.
Is this the inverter cable, wire, LCD?
Please help and thanks in advance.

A bad inverter or inverter cable would give you a dim screen. Move the screen up and down and see if the is any change. Your issue sounds like a bad Display Data Cable cable or a failing LCD. To get you to the correct guide and parts please give us the last three figures of your serial number. Also to help isolate the problem, hook it up to an external monitor and see if the problem persists.
