Display Data cable or connector or LCD problem?
My MBP (Model A1150) boots fine and external display (DVI) works fine all the time, if the DIsplay Data Cable or inverter cable is disconnected from the logic board. Of course, nothing on internal LCD screen (since cable is removed).
My MBP boots fine 10-20% of the times, if both Display Data cable and inverter cable stay connected. In this scenario, the LCD screen display stays almost blank and viewable only if I shine light on it. External display works fine too. Again, MBP does not always boot up fine in this case (I hear half-broken boot chimes 4-5 times)
Could it be the Display Data cable or connector on logic board or on LCD screen or the screen itself? Should I open the LCD screen to check the connectors?

I got this MBP ~4 yrs ago. At the time, it would display fine on 1/3 of LCD screen, while the remaining would show grey/green linings. ~1.5 yrs ago, our IT personnel suggested replacing the LCD screen and did so (as a favor), however, he never got the new screen to display anything and suspected logic board. Not sure what else he troubleshot, but he said that I was better off getting a new one. After running to apple store and not getting any help (out of warranty and not supported), I put this MBP in the closet until last week, when I saw ifixit.com website and started troubleshooting and here we are...

Result = --- Good news ------ It turned out to be a pinched inverter cable connection (or loose connections) inside the LCD panel. I rerouted the cable a bit carefully and removed/reconnected the connections to the inverter, and voila, LCD panel started getting enough power and it started working. Thanks a lot.
