Tightening the hinge on the MacBook Pro with Retina Display

Hi guys,

I recently got the MacBook Pro with Retina Display and noticed that the hinge was rather loose. It's not to the point where the display would move up/down when I'm typing on solid surface, but it does wobble more than my previous MacBook Pro and there isn't as much resistance when I'm opening or closing the lid.

My question for anyone, but perhaps to the person who disassembled this laptop, is how easy it is to tighten the screws on the hinge. I bought the iFixit tools necessary to open the bottom plate (except the plastic prying tool). I'm wondering if the plastic cover (that goes over the hinge) comes off easily and if no glue is required. If so, can anyone give me a little more detailed instruction than the two pictures on the teardown guide?

Thank!

This is should still be under warranty START A CLAIM WITH APPLE. If you haven't purchased Apple care you may want to rethink that. This could turn out to be a design problem similar to the MacBook Air hinges.

Hey there Korbearus,

First of all, machead is correct. In order to maintain the integrity of your Apple warranty, you should take the machine to a "certified" Apple care center.

That being said, tightening the display hinges is very simple. Aside from the 10 pentalobe screws holding the lower case in place, there is nothing in the way except for those rubber covers. They are held on with a mild adhesive and come off easily.

I have 2013 rMBP and the hinge is wobbly. Tightening the screws under the rubber covers did not help for me. I'll continue investigating. Just looking for a good guide and for me, this was not it.

Found the answer. Tightening the 6 screws under two rubber covers as Brett mentioned did not fix my issue (though that may fix yours). For me (I have Mac Model A1398), the other four screws that needed tightening were under the long plastic clutch over. Once I tightened those, everything is good.

Unless you are comfortable and proficient at repairing laptops, I would not recommend doing this work yourself.

Garrettn can you explain the clutch cover a bit more? I have same model and have no problem opening up the mac, just want to confirm what I should be tightening. I have the same issue.

@waynestratton - Here's the two IFIXIT guides you'll need to review: MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2012 Display Assembly Replacement & MacBook Pro Retina Display Teardown.

Basically, you'll need to take the display off and then pop off the clutch cover to gain access to the display side hinge screws (Step3 in the second guide). See if they are just loose. Use some fingernail polish to act as screw seal. If not you'll need replace the hinges.

For me, the six screws under the two rubber covers were really easy to get at. Try them first. Mine were already tight and tightening them did nothing for my wobbly hinge.

The clutch cover is the long black plastic strip at the hinge. You can see it externally on every pre-2016 mbp without even opening it. The screws I need to get at were under there and its a bit tricky to remove. If you break it you can order a new one. Just google "Macbook Pro Clutch Cover" Maybe there is a guide to removing it....I just winged it and figured it out.

@garrettn - Check the second guide I posted you'll see the cover slides to the side so the pins clear (slide lock). If you force it without removing the display you can damage things. Besides, putting on a replacement clutch cover back on will be difficult and you could end up breaking it as well.

The screws under the rubber covers are the case side hinge screws which is the first ones to check on. These are the lid side hinge screws that maybe loose and/or one of the hinges clutches is bad where you'll need to replace it.
