The Keurig is a single cup coffee brewing system manufactured by Keurig Dr. Pepper, formerly Keurig Green Mountain, along with the various K-Cup pods proprietary to the system. Keurig coffee makers utilize these single-use pods in order to provide a quick and easy experience by negating the need to measure out bulk ingredients, although at the cost of increased waste. Coincidentally, Keurig has faced criticism in the past for their non-recyclable and non-biodegradable cups.
Keurig released their first brewing system, the B2000, in 1998. This machine was designed specifically for offices, as the creators John Sylvan and Peter Dragone initially sought to solve the problem of the stale office coffee pot. They started the design of a home brewer in 2002, but struggled to make the design compact or economical enough for the average kitchen. In 2004, they managed to prototype a home use brewer, the B100, but to a more competitive market, as other companies had already jumped on the pod brewing train.
In 2014, Keurig introduced the Keurig 2.0 line, which disabled use of the brewer if a 3rd party pod was detected. This initiated several hacks and modifications by both pod manufacturers and consumers alike.
In December of 2014, Keurig recalled around 7 million units of the Keurig Mini Plus (Models K10 and B31), which had the potential to spew boiling water from the machine causing a burn hazard.
