Background
The Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 1 was the first generation of the E14 14-inch business laptop series, introduced around late 2019 to early 2020 as an affordable ThinkPad designed for small businesses and professional users. It combines the traditional ThinkPad keyboard and TrackPoint with a mainstream performance platform based on 10th-generation Intel® Core™ processors.
As a “Gen 1” model, it uses the original hardware and chassis design that later generations expanded upon. It’s not as thin or feature-rich as newer models, but it remains a solid value option for everyday productivity tasks and general office use.
Technical Specifications — Gen 1
CPU / Platform
- Up to 10th-generation Intel® Core™ processors:

How to Identify the Gen 1 E14
To confirm that you specifically have a ThinkPad E14 Gen 1 (first generation):
Check the Model/Type Number
- We will be working on a 20RA Gen 1 model
- Look on the bottom case for a sticker showing the machine type/model, such as 20RA (early Gen 1 IDs).
- You can enter that number on Lenovo’s support site to confirm the exact generation.
System Information in Windows
- Press Windows + R, type
msinfo32→ Enter. - Look at “System Model” — this will usually say something like ThinkPad E14 Gen 1 or a machine type that corresponds to Gen 1.
Processor Family
- Gen 1 is defined by 10th-gen Intel® Core CPUs (e.g., i5-10210U, i7-10510U) if your CPU is 10th gen, that strongly indicates a Gen 1 model.
Troubleshooting (Gen 1 Specific)
Power / Charging
- Gen 1 relies primarily on the USB-C port for charging — if that port fails, the laptop may not charge.
• Try alternate USB-C chargers known to support Power Delivery.
• Inspect the USB-C connector for debris or loose pins.
Display Issues
- Some Gen 1 units shipped with poorer quality TN panels — low brightness and narrow viewing angles are normal on those variants.
• Identify the panel type viamsinfo32or part number lookup if colors/viewing angles are bad.
Keyboard / Trackpad
- If TrackPoint or trackpad stops responding, update or reinstall the Synaptics/ThinkPad input drivers from Lenovo Support.
Wi-Fi Connectivity
- Try toggling Airplane Mode off → on, and reinstall updated Intel/Realtek drivers.
- For intermittent Wi-Fi, sometimes replacing the M.2 Wi-Fi card helps if antennas remain intact.
Memory / Performance
- If performance seems low or multitasking is sluggish:
• Consider upgrading RAM. Gen 1 has a single SO-DIMM slot; moving to 16 GB DDR4 (or possibly 32 GB, though not an official Lenovo spec) improves responsiveness.
• Use Task Manager to check if swapping or heavy background tasks are consuming resources.
Hardware Diagnostics Tools
- Use Lenovo Vantage to run system health scans and update BIOS/drivers.
- For stubborn issues, the UEFI diagnostics menu can test RAM, storage, battery, and more before booting Windows.
