Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E15 Repair

The Lenovo ThinkPad E15 is a series of business laptops released by Lenovo in late 2019 as the successor to the Lenovo ThinkPad E590. As compared to the premium T or X series products, the “Edge” (E) family targets small-to-medium sized businesses and educational users by providing the same level of durability, spill-resistant keyboards and TrankPoints at a more affordable price point.

The E15 series spanning from Gen 1 through Gen 4, features a 15.6 inch display and a chassis typically composed of an aluminum lid and a plastic base. Through the generations, the internal specifications have changed dramatically. Early models like Gen 1 were powered by 10th Gen Intel processors, while the later models like Gen 2 and beyond introduced options between AMD Ryzen and 11th/12th Gen Intel processors. Despite these changes, the series has maintained user upgradability by offering M.2 NVMe SSD slots and one or more upgradeable DDr4/DDR5 SODIMM RAM slots.

You can spot ThinkPad E15 by spotting certain features such as:

• Colour: The Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E15 can be identified by its unique utilitarian, matte black and silver variants.
• Dimensions: The ThinkPad E15 measures approximately 368 mm x 245 mm x 18.9 mm (14.49" x 9.65" x 0.74") and weighs roughly 1.7 kg to 1.9 kg (3.75 to 4.3 lbs), depending on the specific material configuration (aluminum vs. plastic).
• The Red Nub: An iconic red TrackPoint right in the middle of the keyboard.
• The Logo: The dot over the “i” in the ThinkPad logo on the lid, and the palm rest of the device lights up red when the laptop is turned on.
• Display Size: Compared to the previous model, ThinkPad E14, which has a 14-inch display, ThinkPad E15 has a 15.6-inch display.
• Number Pad: Unlike the older model, ThinkPad E14, the ThinkPad E15 has a number pad on the right side in the keyboard.
• Power Button: Unlike some older models in the ThinkPad series like E590, which has a square fingerprint sensor by the trackpad. ThinkPad E15 has a circular power button right above the number pad, which also acts as a fingerprint reader with an LED ring around it.
• USB-C docking: Unlike the devices in the premium ThinkPad T15 which have a docking station connector on the side or the bottom, the ThinkPad E15 does not feature a docking station connector. Instead, it relies on USB-C for docking.

It is also important to identify the specific generation of the device (from Gen 1 through Gen 4), because of how the batteries, screens, and other internal components are not interchangeable. To find the exact model of your laptop, flip the device over and look for the black sticker on the bottom case. On the black sticker, look for the word “Type”  followed by a four-character code which will help you identify your exact model:

• Gen 1: 20RD, 20RE
• Gen 2: 20TD, 20TE (Intel) or 20T8, 20T9 (AMD)
• Gen 3: 20YG, 20YH, 20YJ, 20YK (AMD only)
• Gen 4: 21E6, 21E7 (Intel) or 21ED, 21EE (AMD)
