It was powered by the legendary 3.5-liter Rover V8 engine—a lightweight, all-aluminum unit derived from a Buick design—which produced up to 150 hp and allowed for a 0-60mph time of roughly 8 seconds. To handle the extra power, the TR8 featured significant mechanical upgrades over the TR7, including a strengthened five-speed manual transmission, a revised 3.08:1 rear axle ratio, and larger front disc brakes. While highly regarded for its improved power-to-weight ratio and distinctive styling, its production was cut short by the financial struggles of British Leyland, with only around 2,800 units ever built.
