If your '98 - '02 Honda Accord speedometer is performing erratically, or not at all, your vehicle speed sensor may be damaged or broken. Use this guide to replace your damaged vehicle speed sensor.

Pull on the hood release lever just inside the passenger door to pop the hood.

Locate the hood release latch under the hood. Use one hand to press up on the latch while you lift the hood.

Insert the hood prop rod into the hole in the hood marked with an arrow.

Locate the engine air intake unit on the back of the engine.

Locate the screw for the hose clamp securing the air intake hose to the engine's air intake unit.

Loosen the the hose clamp, using a Phillips #2 screwdriver, by turning the screw counter-clockwise until the back end of the screw no longer protrudes out of the hose clamp.

Pull the air intake hose off of the engine air intake unit.

Pull the air intake hose and valve cover breather hose away from each other until they detach.

Bend the air intake tube so that there is an easily accessible path to below the engine air intake and the back of the engine.
NOTE: Remove the small clamp from the intake hose before moving the tube out of the way, you run the risk of losing the clamp down in the engine compartment.

Look behind the engine, almost directly under the engine air intake unit, to locate the vehicle speed sensor.

Locate the sensor's 12 mm hex bolt. The bolt is slightly further back and towards the driver's side of the car, relative to the vehicle speed sensor connector.
If you use a socket, make sure it is a 6 point so you will not round off the nut. Also, don’t forget to check the wires for stress on the insulation or wires pulled from the connector, they will need to be repaired before replacement of the connector on the new part.

Pull the vehicle speed sensor out of it's hole.

Disconnect the sensor from the wiring harness by pressing the grey tab on top of the harness connector and pulling the connector and sensor away from each other.

Remove the sensor from the engine bay.
The Speed Sensor is definitely on the top of the transmission, back of the engine, on the passenger side. A little harder to see than the photos suggest. Everything after all these years was not coming apart easily. This guide made the whole process very doable. A flathead screw driver under the arm to the bolt hole helped get the sensor out. When tightening the Sensor bolt it’s listed at 13ft lbs / 18Nm. My Speedometer works again, along with my odometer and cruise control. Awesome Thank you.

Hey I raplace the speed sensor but my speed gage it still doesn't work, any other Ideas what else can it be?
Try getting a manual (Haynes?) and check the wiring as suggested. Maybe try a different gauge cluster?
Detach the sensor cable before pulling the sensor out. I used 2 shorter extensions and went at it from the side. Clean around the sensor before you take it out.
hello, pls i have a Honda accord 1999 manual transmission, i always notice that whenever i put on my a/c while the car is moving, immediately the car speed will reduce, pls advice me on what to do, or what do i do tell the mechanic to change
The a/c compressor runs on a belt that runs from the engine so when you turn the a/c it consumes some engine power that’s why you notice a power decrease

I have a sort-of related question: this air intake hose - does it have another opening underneath? The one in my 1998 Honda Accord EX 4-cylinder needs to be replaced, but the only ones we can find have extra open ports. Thanks for any info and advice!

I had the same problem. I just got the part, and plugged the extra hole at the bottom. Here’s how: I got a can of mousse or hairspray (that was all used up) that fit in the hole and cut the top off, so that the can was just long enough to plug the hole, and inserted the can so that the outside, bottom of the can went into the extra hole. Then I put a hose clamp around it to ensure a tight seal, and also put some electrical tape around it, too. I suppose another option would be to get the part from a Honda dealer, but it would cost a lot more.

My car just had a radiator timing belt and water pump put on so when I removed the crankshaft pulley the red wire that runs behind the pulley had snapped so I twisted it back together and taped it now my car has a funny stall when I pick up speed and the check engine light came on and will not go off the code it read's is please help if possible 98 honda accord LX 2.3
