Dirty oil is a poor lubricant for your vehicle. Regular oil changes are important for keeping your Jeep running well. Check your Jeep manual for when oil changes should be conducted. The following guide will show you how to properly change your oil.

Locate the two grey latches on each side of the hood near the headlights.
-
Pull the latches away from the hood to release the latches.
-
-
-
Locate the oil cap on the top side of the engine (indicated in red in the image). To remove the cap, twist hard in a counter-clockwise motion.
-

-
-
Using an appropriately sized socket and socket wrench, remove the oil drain plug. (In a pinch, you can use an adjustable wrench.) Twist counter-clockwise to loosen it.
-
Let the oil completely drain from the car and into the drain pan.
-
Replace (reinsert) the plug by twisting it clockwise. Tighten it with the wrench following the same clockwise motion.
-
After the plug is replaced, wipe it down with a dirty rag to clean off any outside oil. This ensures that oil will not drip onto the ground.
-
-
-
Check the oil level. First, locate the oil dip-stick (marked in the first image by red).
-
Pull out the oil dip-stick and wipe clean it clean with a paper towel or rag.
-
Re-insert the oil dip-stick completely and pull it slowly out.
-
The oil should reach to the safe-fill area on the stick (marked in the image in yellow). If it doesn't, add more fresh oil through the funnel until it reaches this mark.
-
Your oil is new, and your oil filter is clean.

The use of an adjustable wrench to remove the drain-plug is ill-advised. A rounded off plug will be extremely difficult to shift. Get a socket, or a drain plug wrench.
Someone forgot to install the filter gasket ring. They frequently can be found loose in the box, and can be forgotten if you dont know there should be one. But you wont do it a second time!
