First you will flip your laptop upside down so the battery side is facing up.

In order to access the battery you will need to remove the 18 5mm screws. Using your Phillips J1 bit remove the screws.
You don’t need to remove the screws (deeply recessed) to the side of the back feet (near the battery)
These hold the screen to the base & don’t affect removal of the silver keyboard plastic from the black base.
i should add that it’s two screws in total - one per back foot

Yes don’t need to take cover off -battery can be removed by using a pen/screwdriver to slide the tab to the side & battery releases.
It has a very small image of an arrow with a pen next to it. Very misleading (I tried to push it in first!)
If you wiggle the battery, you can see the battery release tab moves with it :-)
