Artemide Tolomeo switch replacement

Giriş

After a few thousand switching operations, the switch of a Tolomeo may no longer function properly. The unit of switch and lamp holder is available from Artemide as a spare part. These instructions show you how to replace it.

    • Never forget to disconnect the power plug before starting repairs.

    • Unscrew the Phillips screw on the clamp. You may have to hold the nut on the opposite side.

    • The cover of the socket also has a flanged edge. Lift the cover together with the socket out of the clamp.

    • The socket is fixed at the top with a wide ring. This ring is secured against unscrewing by a small brass catch.

    • Press the brass catch with a small flat-blade screwdriver about 1 mm toward the center of the socket. Do not bend the brass catch too much.

    • Depending on the socket, the notch may look different. You may have to push it down.

    • Then unscrew the wide ring on the lamp socket.

    I’ve changed the switches on several of Tolomeo lamps with no problems.

    Maybe 4 or 5 switches over time.

    They’ve clearly changed the design, because the one the I’m trying to fix now has this pivoting thing.

    However, it’s impossible to unscrew the socket.

    I love my Tolomeo lamps, but these switches have always been absolute garbage.

    Somehow, they managed to make them even worse.

    Now it’ll cost me over $100 to ship it to Artemide for repair AND no lamp for at least a month.

    • The cable is secured by a strain relief on the outside. Unscrew the plastic Allen screw until the cable is loose.

    • Slide the unit out of the switch and lamp socket.

    • Loosen the two small screws that connect the inner part of the socket and the switch to the two power supply lines.

    • Replace the unit.

    • Here is a picture of the switch. You can buy the complete set quite expensive from Artemide, because the socket has been machined by hand. This has the advantage that you can also renew the socket.

    • You may also find the switch on its own, which is cheaper. It is a snap-in rocker switch with screw connection. The cutout size is 20 x 14 mm, 15 mm installation depth from the frame. The frame is 3 mm high with the dimensions 26x16 mm. This one could fit.

    In my case I didnt have to replace. I opened the plactic part of the switch, there is a small thin metal plate. Take it out, clean the contact and bend it a little bit, put it back. Now it works again.

Thank you so much for taking the time to compile this @vauweh ! Super greatful. It took me approx. 1 hour including getting all tools together, set it up, repair it and clean the desk.

The recommended Amazon switch worked well (<5 EUR). My Tolomeo was bought around 2020 or so. It took me a while to figure out step 4.

In my case I needed to press the lever on the outer diameter down so that the big ring can rotate over the lever. More light helped to see the mechanism (bad luck if your lamp is broken!).

My original issue was that my Tolomeo randomly turned off but not on again. It sometimes took a couple of days until it turned on again. Then after a couple of minutes it turned off again. Right now it seems to work with the new switch. So thank you for explaining how the repair works!
