Same issue with mine. Took it apart and found that the side with spring loaded holder was broken.
I am having the same issue it’s like a part is missing for the pin side not the square sides to hold the brush roll in place.
I have the same issue…it seems that the spring part was lost.have anyone of you find a replacement parts?
All right, I fixed it. Here it goes:
Symptom: the roller brush will not stay in because the brass bushing would not spring out (remains recessed)
1) Remove battery
2) Remove 8 silver screws around the circumference (no other screws need to be removed)
3) Wiggle top and bottom half apart (be gentle and patient)
4) Remove the bushing cover (2 screws), and the spring
6) Remove brass bushing
7) Remove hair around the bushing
In my case the plastic around the brass bushing was “swollen”, guess it partially melted from friction heat likely caused by all that stuck hair.
8) File away the “swelling” to reduce the plastic part diameter
9) Verify that it now slides back and forth easily
10) Reinstall the bushing, spring, and the plastic cover
11) Reinstall top and bottom parts
12) Add a bit of oil inside the bushing and reinstall the roller brush
13) Shave your head and your cat (to prevent the same problem happening again). Alternatively, you can wear a shower cap at all times when you are at home, and trade your cat for a fish.
This worked thank you!!

Two white ball like plastic on each end of my brush. One fell off and we could not find it. Can not tell Bissell the part we need. Do you know? It looks like what little girls wore on the braids of their hair when corn rolled (odd but best description)
