Fossil FS-4494 Battery Replacement

This guide demonstrates how to replace the battery in a Fossil FS-4494 watch. The alternate model of this watch is a Fossil AM 4494. Today, when a watch—especially an older model with a small battery—stops working, people often discard it in favor of modern alternatives with built-in technology and rechargeable batteries.

If your watch is not ticking, the battery is likely dead and needs to be replaced.

A couple of warnings before you begin this repair:

Be sure to note the battery type before you recycle your old battery. If you do not get an identical battery, the watch will not work.
The watch parts are fragile, so be extremely careful when taking out the battery and replacing it.
- The battery holder inside the watch can easily be broken
Do not rush the process, as moving through each step too fast can cause damage to watch components
The watch cover on the back is slippery, and it may take you several tries to open it with your needle-nose pliers.
- Alternatively, use a specific watch back removal tool to make this process easier.
- Be careful not to force the watch cover open with your needle-nose pliers, as the pliers can slip and scratch the cover of the watch.

Before you begin, remove the watch band.
Flip the Fossil FS-4494 watch backside up.

Be extremely careful when you apply pressure with the pliers, because the watch's backside cover is slippery.
There are multiple indentations for you to place the needle-nose pliers into.
The back of the watch will release with a pop sound when unlocked.
With one hand hold the watch face on the front, and with the other hand use the needle nose pliers (or a watch back removal tool) to grip the backside cover and twist the backside cover counterclockwise to unlock it.

Be extremely careful when removing the backside cover as each piece inside the watch is delicate and can be easily broken.

When you remove the battery, do not shift the other components inside the watch around. Shifting the other components inside the watch can damage the components and the watch itself.
Remember how and where you pulled out the watch's battery, as that will be the identical process when you place a new battery back into the watch.
Turn the watch so it is easy to access to the watch's battery.
With your needle nose pliers, carefully grab the battery from the watch.
Pull the battery out of the watch.

Do not throw the battery away because you need an identical battery to replace it in your watch. Save the old battery so that you can check if the new battery matches the original battery.

Do not buy the wrong battery for your watch as using the wrong battery can cause damage to the watch.
Make sure to buy the exact same model of the battery when shopping in your local hardware store or from an online retailer.
Look closely at the battery, you will see writing on the surface of the battery. This writing will give the model code for the battery.
Check the model code for the new battery before installing the battery inside the watch. If the model code for the new battery does not match the model code for the original battery, you must purchase another battery which has the correct model code.

Be extremely careful as the holder for the battery is delicate and can break easily.
The holder should have a good grip on the battery.
Place the new battery in the same place as the old battery.
Remove the pliers once the battery is inserted.
Make sure the battery is not moving around inside the watch.

Do not twist the backside of the watch further clockwise if it feels stuck. If it feels stuck, it is either because it is tight enough or it is not aligned flatly against the watch. If you twist too much, you may strip the back of the watch and break it.
The backside of the watch should be tight enough so that it is difficult to twist clockwise.
Place the backside watch cover onto the main body of watch.
Twist the backside watch cover clockwise with the needle-nose pliers.

Make sure the watch is working and then set up your watch to your time zone.
