Overtime, the trackpad is a component that is likely to fail. If the mouse isn’t properly tracking movements or if the mouse isn’t moving at all, your trackpad may need to be replaced. If you have noticed issues while using your trackpad or you simply want to replace it, this guide will lay out how to remove and replace it step by step.

Remove the ten 5mm screws holding down the motherboard using the Phillips #0 screwdriver.

Remove the flat flex cable that connects the touchpad to the laptop.
Note: be very careful when removing the flat cable. It is fixed to the motherboard with a miniscule clamp that breaks easily if you just pull the cable. You need to use a magnifying glass and a tooth pick to lift the clamp off the cable, otherwise it will snap in half and will be permanently damaged. I broke mine while replacing the hand rest plate om this model, and the touch pad is now dysfunctional.

Remove the cable in the left hand of this picture that connects the motherboard to hard drive.
Step 9a, remove the motherboard. I couldn’t get it all the way out, but I was able to lift it enough to expose the screws in the next step. Be careful doing this, though, as you will be bending the motherboard a little and don’t want it to crack. I don’t think I missed any screws, but there seemed to be some tape and wires that would have needed to be disconnected to get the motherboard the rest of the way out.

Using the Phillips #0 screwdriver, remove the the two 5mm screws in this image and then remove the glue flex cable being held.
Wrong two screws. Remove the two silver screws just left of the circled post (right of the hard drive well, in a hole punched through the black plastic). As mentioned above, I couldn’t remove the motherboard, but I was able to lift it enough to expose the screws and attack them at an angle.
Also, you may not need to remove the ribbon cable. I didn’t buy a new one and reused the old one without removing it. Disconnect it from the touchpad by pulling the black ribbon clamp down, toward the ribbon. This is similar to the connection to the motherboard at the other end of the cable.

Hello,
I would like to ask you one thing - do you recall if the TouchPad can be adjusted (position wise) before srewing down? I have this problem where the right side on the TouchPad is too close to the palmrest (between spacebar and the TrackPoint buttons), and when I click the right physical button it collides with it, providing not so great using experience. So I was wondering it is posiible to losen the screws and move it back a little.
Is it possible? Thanks in advance for answear.
Do I have to reinstall drivers after this? I replaced the touchpad but now two fingers scrolling is not working. Any ideas?
Do I have to remove the keyboard to replace the touchpad for thinkpad t450?
It does not seem necessary when following the instructions above!
Will post here again to warn people. Be very careful when removing the flat flex glue cable that attaches to the motherboard. The clamp can easily be damaged by just manipulating the cable. Make sure to open the clamp first before removing or the clamp may break and will not be able to be replaced other than replacing the main board!
