Sony Xperia 5 IV Screen Replacement

    • Before starting the screen replacement process, you'll want to back up as much of your data as possible. If your screen is so broken you can't use your phone at all, you can connect a monitor and mouse with a USB-C to HDMI cable and a USB-C hub.

    • Once you've backed up your data, turn off the phone, remove any external cases or covers, and remove the SIM/microSD card tray.

    • Before disassembling your phone, it's a good idea to give it a good cleaning to avoid getting dirt inside delicate things like connectors or the camera lenses. I like to do this with 91% rubbing alcohol on a lint-free cleaning wipe.

    • Like most modern phones, the Xperia 5 IV's back cover is held on with a lot of fairly strong adhesive. You'll want a heat gun or hair dryer, a strong suction cup that's meant for removing LCDs, and non-marring prying tools such as guitar picks or plastic spudgers.

    • Heat the back of the phone evenly, being careful not to hold the heat gun in one place for too long. If you're using a heat gun and not a hair dryer the low heat setting should be all you need. You don't want to damage the battery or internal cables.

    • After about 30 seconds of using the heat gun, stick the suction cup to the back of the phone and see if the back cover is starting to come loose.

    • If it is, take your pick or spudger and carefully pry around the edges. You may need to continue heating the areas where the glue hasn't let go yet. You shouldn't need to insert the spudger or pick very far into the phone, the adhesive is only about 2 millimeters wide and there are connectors and cables you don't want to damage.

    • At the bottom of the phone there's a dark plastic piece with 4 Phillips #00 screws in it. Remove these 4 screws and then carefully pry out the plastic piece to access the display connector.

    • Helpful hint: When removing delicate screws, you can stick them to a piece of tape in roughly the places they'd go back in. This helps you remember what screw goes where, in case any of the screws are slightly different sizes.

    • Once the black plastic piece is free, first unplug the battery connector (connector highlighted in red in the second photo on this step, on the bottom right). This may have unplugged itself when you lifted the black piece, but if not it's a good idea to unplug it before continuing.

    • Now unplug the display connector (connector highlighted in blue, on the bottom left). You can lift it up and carefully unplug the display connector (connector that comes in from the left side) with a small spudger. These connectors are extremely delicate, be careful not to damage the connector on the phone's circuit board.

    • You don't need to unplug any of the other connectors, but if one comes loose make sure it gets plugged in. The battery connector won't plug in anywhere else but it's possible to plug the antenna connectors into the wrong ports if you're not careful.

    • The glass digitizer and OLED panel are also held on with adhesive, so we'll remove them with the heat gun, suction cup, and spudger similar to how we removed the back panel.

    • When I removed mine, the digitizer glass separated from the OLED. If this happens, you can peel the OLED off the rest of the phone like a sticker since we can't reuse it anyhow.

    • Once the old OLED and digitizer have been removed, make sure to clean up any bits of broken glass, dirt, adhesive, etc. that could prevent the new one from mounting properly.

    • Since it will be very hard to remove the new screen without damaging it once it's installed, it's a good idea to carefully connect the new screen before adding any adhesive or glue, and make sure the screen and digitizer work properly since most parts sellers won't take a damaged part back if it's broken.

    • If you're lucky, your screen will have some die cut adhesive on the back of it. If so, just peel off the protective backing on the adhesive, carefully fish the display connector through to the back of the phone, and carefully stick the screen in place. Emphasis on carefully, the adhesive they use is very sticky and you may only get one try.

    • My screen did not have adhesive on it, so I attached it using a combination of 3M 9474LE double-sided tape, and some "M-3035" liquid rubber adhesive that was left over from refoaming a pair of speakers. The exact liquid adhesive isn't critical but you want something flexible and fast curing.

    • To start, I cut a few strips of the double sided tape to fit in roughly the places where the original adhesive would have been, using the back of the old OLED as a guide. Peel away the paper from one side of the tape and attach it to the phone

    • Only apply tape to the metal frame of the phone, not on ribbon cables, the silver grounding contacts, etc.

    • Before applying liquid adhesive, peel the backing of the other side of the tape so it will be ready when you go to install the screen.

    • Since I couldn't cut pieces of tape small enough to get into some areas I also used a small amount of liquid adhesive around the edges. The key word here is "small amount", you don't want to get glue into the selfie cam, the speaker, etc.

    • Once the liquid adhesive has been applied, carefully fish the display connector through to the back of the phone and stick the screen in place. If any excess liquid adhesive seeps out between the edge of the screen and phone, you can quickly wipe this away with rubbing alcohol.

    • Carefully connect the display cable to the connector on the phone circuit board. All you should need to do is line it up and gently push it down until it seats in the connector.

    • Make sure the other connectors that are normally hidden behind the plastic piece are still connected properly, then reconnect the battery connector and reinstall the plastic piece. Make sure that the plastic piece is clipped into place properly before reinstalling the 4 screws.

    • Before reattaching the back cover, it's a good idea to turn on the phone one more time and make sure everything works, including the screen, speakers, microphone, cameras, WiFi, and cellular data.

    • Make sure the cameras are free of any dust, etc. before reinstalling the back cover. If they did pick up some dust, you can carefully brush it out with a soft paintbrush. Similarly, make sure the part of the back that covers the camera lenses is free of dust.

    • If the back cover adhesive didn't get too damaged in the removal process you can press the cover back on.

    • In my case, the adhesive came apart and balled up in a few places, so I ended up removing it and using more of the rubber adhesive I used for the edges of the screen. Since I always keep my phone in a case, I used very little adhesive to hold the cover on.

    • At this point you're all done.
