Introduction
If you have an old or newly acquired Maxxum 5000/7000 with battery corrosion, this guide will show you how to clean it.
=== ***GUIDE NOTES*** ===
* ***THIS GUIDE ONLY COVERS THE AAA COVER. The AA cover can be cleaned without disassembly, outside of severe corrosion issues where it may have gone on the bottom of the terminals.***
* ***READ: YOU WILL LOSE SOME OF THE NICKEL COATING -- NO WAY AROUND IT!***[br]
``***''Do not skip proper treatment to avoid this; residual alkaline can cause further problems, which is permanent on the screw plate contactsmay be fatal!''***``
=== ***Battery replacement options*** ===
If your original cover is unrepairable, the 2CR5 cover (BH-70T) completely mitigates the issue by using lithium cells. ***However, the required battery is not readily available in most retail stores. It may be possible to find these at a drug store (CVS/Walgreens/RiteAid/locally owned regional)* or Best Buy**, but availability is (generally) poor.***
``***''*Check in advance; drug stores tend to focus on "disposable" cameras.''***``[br]
``***''**More reliable availability but check prior if possible.''***``
***The retail availability was somewhat maintained due to use in gun scopes, binoculars and distance calculators (as well as film/early digital cameras), so you could buy them from places like Cabella's or Bass Pro Shops at one point. However, these switched to the (easier to find) CR123***, ***so this is generally no longer the case. Unless there is a camera store with stock, these are "online only". Stock up, or 3D print a*** [link|https://www.yeggi.com/q/cr123+adapter/|CR123 adapter] ***and get nickel strips.***
``***''Some manufacturers use terms like CR123A, DL123 (Duracell), and other terms. Same battery, different names.[br]
IMPORTANT: Surefire uses the term "SF123A". YOU OFTEN HAVE TO CUT THE WASHER FROM THE NEGATIVE TERMINAL. TRY TO AVOID THESE.''***``
=== NOT RECOMMENDED ===
* ''1.5V primary Lithium. ***Will not leak and easy to find, poor economics and mediocre runtime compared to 2x 3V cells (CR123) or a 2CR5.***''
** ''(AA/BH-70L)/(AAA/BH-70S).''
