Fan is disabled in BIOS
If your device is running in Windows 10, there is a chance your BIOS settings were modified from a bug and disabled the ‘Fan Device’ setting.
- To access BIOS, completely power off your device by holding the power button until the screen turns off and then power back on by pressing the power button once. After pressing the power button, immediately press and hold the “esc” key until you see a white and blue screen.
- Use the arrow keys to highlight the ‘Fan Device’ setting and press enter to enable the setting.
- After the “Fan Device” is "Enabled,” press the “esc” key once to exit BIOS.
Fan is not clean and/or has debris blocking the openings
Dirt and debris are covering up and impeding the fans ability to work properly. Usually caused by a lack of proper cleaning and buildup over time.
- Remove any larger debris from the blades and/or fan opening.
- Take a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol and gently rub it over the fan openings.
Fan motor is ‘dead’
When turned on, the fan does not spin. This could be a symptom of the motor being disconnected or damaged in some way.
- Take apart laptop using screwdriver and check to see if fan is connected
- If fan is disconnected or broken, remove the back panels and disconnect any connections to the fan and remove it from the device.
- Replace the fan itself and install it into the computer.
