The screen of the NOOK Simple Touch with GlowLight is frozen

The screen of your Nook may become unresponsive to touch and/or button commands for a variety of reasons.

The screen is dirty

The Nook screen may become frozen if it is too dirty. To fix this issue:

  • Step 1: Dust the screen and make sure there is nothing on the screen that may cause interference.
  • Step 2: Carefully slide a piece of paper against the screen and where it meets the side of the Nook and also try blowing against these edges to get rid of any dirt on the sides of the screen

The device has been in use for too long

If the screen of your Nook is still frozen, it is likely that the device has been in use for a long period of time and needs to be force restarted. To force restart your Nook:

  • Step 1: Press the power button, hold it down for 20 seconds, and then release it. That turns off the Nook.
  • Step 2: Wait a minute and press the power button for 2 seconds. That turns it back on again.

The device's charge has gotten too low

A Nook may become unresponsive if its charge has gotten too low

  • Step 1: Charge the device via a wall outlet using the USB cable and AC adapter for several hours. You could also try plugging the Nook into a computer via the USB cable.
  • Step 2: Once the device is fully charged, try turning it on normally. If this doesn’t work, press and hold the power button and the NOOK button for 20 seconds.

Nook is unresponsive to button commands

If the Nook is not responding to button commands, it may not be able to force restart in the way previously described. In this case, let the Nook sit until the battery completely drains. Once the battery has completely drained, it should power off and the screen should go blank. Then, charge the device via the USB cable and the AC cord for several hours. Then turn on the Nook normally.

If the Nook is still unresponsive, you may need to replace the screen.

The Battery Dies Very Fast

If the nook battery dies faster than normal there could be a few reasons

Your brightness may be too bright

To turn down brightness:

  • Step 1 : Click on the quicknav bar
  • Step 2: Select glowlight tab
  • Step 3 : Turn brightness down

This should help extend the battery life. If it continues to die quickly there may be another issue.

The battery may be too old

To change the battery:

  • Step 1: Remove the back cover of the nook
  • Step 2: Disconnect the battery from the center of the device
  • Step 3: Replace the battery

Try as you might the NOOK Simple Touch with GlowLight won’t charge when plugged in.

Broken Charging Cable

You should check if the problem is with your NOOK Simple touch first, try using a new charging cable, or plug the charger into different outlets.

Blocked or Damaged Charging Port

If changing the charging cord or outlet doesn’t help, something could be blocking the charging port, or it might be damaged. You can try to clean the port carefully, preferably with compressed air. But if the port is damaged it’ll need to be replaced.

To clean the charging port use a can of compressed air:

  • Hold the can upright but not too close to the port
  • Apply a few short blasts of air and allow any particles inside the port to fall out

A guide for replacing the charging port can be found here.

Old/Faulty Battery

You just keep giving the same fixes over and over again. None are working. Mine froze in the middle of a story and is not responding to anything. What next??
