iMac Model A1173 2006 Troubleshooting
Released in early 2006. Identified by model #A1173. 17 inch diagonal.
Faulty Screen
Computer Turns on but Screen is Distorted or has many Dead Pixels.
Replacing the Screen
If the screen of the computer is broken, cracked, has dead pixels or is not functioning properly, you will have to replace it. Purchase a replacement screen, take out the old screen and put in the replacement.
Updating Drivers
If the problem is not with the screen it is possible that your video driver is out of date. Check to make sure that your drivers are all up to date and update them all if they are not.
Computer Will Not Turn On
The computer is plugged into a working outlet but will not turn on when the power button is pushed
Faulty Power Adapter
It is possible that the power adapter is not bringing power to the computer because of an internal break or tear. You will have to purchase a new power chord unless there is a visible tear that can be soldered back together.
Faulty Power Supply
If the computer is getting power from the chord but not turning on, then it is possible that the power supply inside the computer is not functioning properly. You will have to purchase a replacement power supply.
Speakers are not Working
The speakers cut out, sound distorted or are not working at all
Replacing the Speakers
If the speakers are not working properly you will have to replace them. Purchase replacement speakers, take out the old ones and put in the replacement.
Sound Card Drivers are out of Date
If the problem is not with the speakers it is likely with the sound driver. Check that your drivers are all up to date and update them all if they are not.
CD Drive is not Working
A CD is stuck in the CD drive and will not come out, The CD drive will not take CD's in or will not read any CD's
Replacing the CD Drive
If the CD drive is not working then you will have to replace it. Purchase a replacement CD drive, take out the old drive and put in the replacement.
Damaged CD's
Make sure that the CD is not the problem. Clean off any dirt and make sure there are no large scratches that may be throwing off the CD reader.
Hard Drive is Faulty
The hard drive is not functioning properly
Replacing the Hard Drive
If the hard drive is not working properly, then you will have to replace it. Purchase a replacement hard drive, take out the old drive and put in the replacement.
There is a Virus on the Hard Drive
If you do not believe it's a hardware issue, it is possible that your hardware is not functioning properly because it has a virus. If it's a virus, wiping your hard drive and re-installing your operating system should fix the problem.
Resetting Your Computer to Factory Settings
It is possible that resetting your computer to factory settings will be sufficient for restoring your computer's functionality.
