“Would an external SSD help in the performance of my computer as bootable + storage device via Thunderbolt 2?”
Simply put - Yes!
-Let me expand on that … If your system is a HDD (SATA) a SSD in either internally or externally is faster! If your system is a Fusion Drive (SATA HDD & PCIe SSD) external drive is also faster (as in your case)! If your system came with a PCIe SSD alone then its equal or faster depending on the external drive.

To be clear we are making the external the boot drive, using your Fusion Drive drive for data will also work.
