Using external SSD as main drive

Hi, I am using iMac 27 inch Late 2015 with 1TB fusion drive.

I have only a basic knowledge of the computers. I use my computer for basic home and office use. But its really slowing up specially on startup. I have upgraded the RAM from 8 to 24 Gb but it hasn't made any difference.

Upon doing some research I understand that the Fusion drive (HDD or PCI or both) parts can be replaced and can be helpful. But that seems a complex process and technicalities are involved.

Referring to your post “Replacing HD portion of Fusion Drive with SSD “ I understand that easiest option would be to mount an external SSD via TB2 and have boot and storage on that drive.

Would you recommend and advise this a solution?

Thanks.

“Would an external SSD help in the performance of my computer as bootable + storage device via Thunderbolt 2?”

Simply put - Yes!

Let me expand on that … If your system is a HDD (SATA) a SSD in either internally or externally (Thunderbolt 2) is faster! If your system is a Fusion Drive (SATA HDD & PCIe SSD) external (Thunderbolt 2) drive is also faster (as in your case)! If your system came with a PCIe SSD alone then its equal or faster depending on the external drive.

To be clear we are making the external the boot drive, using your Fusion Drive drive for data will also work.

BACK UP ALL YOUR DATA!!!

Step 1: Wipe your internal drive

To wipe your internal drive and to begin the process of saving MacOS to your portable SSD, go to this Apple.com article: How to reinstall MacOS from MacOS Recovery.

Step 2: Open Disk Utility

After following instructions for opening macOS Recovery, open “Disk Utility.”

Step 3: Erase existing data

Select SSD from the list of storage disks on the left-hand column.

Step 4: Erase existing data

Select “Erase” to remove all existing data from the drive.

Step 5: Name the SSD

When prompted for the new volume name, call it “macOS SSD” or “Macintosh SSD” Select either APFS or X Extended (Journaled), depending on your disk format & version of macOS. Leave the scheme set as GUID partition map.

Step 6: Close Disk Utility

Close Disk Utility, then select “Reinstall macOS.”

Step 7: Reinstall macOS

Follow the macOS installer prompts, selecting the “macOS SSD” or “Macintosh SSD” volume as the destination for where to install the new operating system.

Hope this helps you somewhat!

Thanks for sharing the detailed steps. It definitely helps and will guide me through steps. But my question is that (for a very basic person in computer understanding, I don't want to open my iMac and deal with complex connections and creating various drives with software and hardware configuration) would an external SSD help in the performance of my computer as bootable + storage device via thunderbolt 2?

Thanks

As long as its run through Thunderbolt, you should see a performance gain. You will not need to open it up doing the above instructions but you will still need to go into Disk Util to format and set up the new SSD.

If you do not want to blank the old Macintosh HD then you will need to set the SSD as startup Disk or hold SHIFT on power on and select the disk manually once macOS is reinstalled :)

Is there a recommended external sdd for this. Will it work as a complete replacement to a failed hdd.

This is a bit tricky, as any external SSD drive that leverages Thunderbolt 2.0 as a connection will work. But, ideally you should replace the drive internally.
