I have electric dryer in 5th top floor of condo, which heats up; however multiple cycles (with all load sizes) Maintenance cleaned the roof filter, removed minimal lint from unit pipe, flexible hose to wall and ran 2 ft wire up the building stack, feeling cool down draft suggesting clear to roof. New small load today over 1 hour and still warm and damp. Suggestions?

I have a gas dryer. Will these steps on troubleshooting work for mine?

I have a Kenmore Elite electric dryer that came with the house when we bought it over 9 years ago that has been taking longer and longer to dry the clothes these last few weeks. The moisture sensor light has not been coming on for the past few times I have used it. So, I decided to trouble shoot it and went to the web and here I am. After watching a few youtube videos, I decided to check out the vent hose for my laundry room is in the middle of the house and I am not sure where it vents too. My vent hose was 2/3 clogged! Long story short, I cleaned everything inside and out and tested it out with a load of wet clothes, the dryer moisture sensor light started working and my clothes are drying quickly again. It’s amazing what some spring cleaning can save you. I was almost to the point of getting a new dryer. Not now. Good for several more years, but I will clean it out every year from now on.

Also check the metal strips that detect how wet your clothes are. There should be two metal strips that are on the inside of the dryer on the grill where the air passes thru to the filter. They should look clean and if they look dirty, running a pencil eraser over them can clean them up. If they don't work correctly, your dryer can't measure how damp your clothes are.

The fronts were clean but when we opened up the lint screen by removing a few screws the connections were covered in lint. Dryer is working well now!

Also check the outside vent - sometimes birds or small animals will make nests in them, or they can accumulate debris. Make sure the cover flap can open freely.

Be sure to clean the lint filter before starting the dryer - EVERY load. Use a long, narrow tube or nozzle to vacuum out the area under the lint filter.

Just learned last night that there is a filter in the vent when it exits the house. Need to go outside to remove and clean the filter. Needs to be done twice a year. I am adding it to my check list for day light savings. Change the time and smoke alarm batteries then the out side dryer vent filter.

After checking the vet and unschooling all the schools in cleaning out all the lint in the dryer how long would it take to see the results. Well for the dryer to start working properly

Excellent chance it's your Coil Valve. This is like an electro-magnet that controls the valve to supply the gas that supplies the heat. On our dryer, the heat would start and you could feel the vent get hot...but it would not STAY hot. The tech replaced the valve kit (there are two in the kit) for a part cost of $35 and labor cost of $146. You can easily do it yourself (YouTube) and part is here: http://www.amazon.com/Kenmore-Gas-Valve-... for a whopping $6 for BOTH.

Sadly I looked this up AFTER the tech was done. Fact is I wouldn't have known what to look for, but that's the "ignorance tax" we pay sometimes. Hope this helps someone else.

Think of a clogged vent, congested air flow, will cause the thermostats to trip early/often .the exhaust vent in the bottom is where you start. And you may have to disassemble unit to get to the internals, fan ect.

Also make sure your washer is spinning properly. If it's clunking during the spin cycle you may not be squeezing enough water out of your clothes before they go to the dryer. All that water would then neeed to be evaporated.

I'm having the same problem and this is what I found. I cleaned my duck cleaned the lint area, did all the cleaning I can do. So I decided to run the unit not being plugged into the vent hose and found that the dry is staying on. Weird right! It work without the vent tube hocked up! This is what I think. The blow motor is a two function process it sucks the heat into the unit a blows it out the vent. What if the motor is no long capable of blowing against any resistance. Which reduces suction of pulling in heat. Ran a load with out the duct work hooked up, clothes are dry! I think my blow motor is no longer or is has a speed control that's not working I got to look that up. I hope this helps.

Update (03/15/2016)

This is from kenmore If the dryer takes too long to dryer or is noisy then the blower wheel could be damaged and require replacement.

Update (03/15/2016)

Ok this is what I found lol blower share the same motor to drum lol. No speed control. Lol but I did find something interesting the high limit thermostat, it controls the fame it it thinks it's getting to hot. So my guess is when the vent tube is off no restrictions it works just fine but when you hook the duct work up it now has a lack of flow then before. Lack of flow high limit thermostat trips shuts the gas off because lack of flow allows more heat to build up it that area. I don't think it is the other thermostat or thermal fuse because it operates just fine When the dust is off and those are on the exhaust side.

Ok so I know it sounds confusing but when send and done my problem was the high limit thermostat. So for $10 my problem was solve. So here is a recap as to what was happening. Dryer was not drying clothes. I had flame but the flame was not staying on long, like 9 seconds to be exact and would take forever to come back on. When I remove the duct from the back of the unit, it would work fine. No Matter how wet the clothes were. So I watched a video on how it work and found that the high limit thermostat goes bad over time if the duct work doesn't get cleaned periodically. Doesn't say how just says it does. So I figured if everything works off the duct why doesn't it when it the duct is hooked up. It's all about air flow and resistance/back pressure. Just like a car! When you add resistance less air flow heat back tracks to the source of fuel. Which has a limit thermostat. $10 and some time researching and a couple loads to verify and my report is it works great. Good luck and God bless America!

I'm gonna try what eric long said if cleaning all the vents does not work. He changed his high limit thermostat and that fixed it for him.

Hi Eric, what video did you watch for this?

I have the same issue. No heat with duct on. Take it off and it's hot and working.

If you've checked everything else, it could still be one of three things:

1. The element may need to be changed. It's a simple and straight forward fix and with help from the internet, anyone can do this repair fairly easily.

2. The are a couple of fuses that are located on the outside of the element housing. When I changed the element on our dryer I replaced these as well. Again, this is an easy install.

3. There is another breaker that is located just inside the front cover. This was not the problem with our dryer but I've heard that it is a common problem. Easy fix - found the instructions by using Google search.

Hope this helps.

Is this answer strictly for the electric dryer? I don't think the gas models have an "element", correct?

Disconnect vent Check for hot air coming out,If yes run a cycle if it dried normally.your problem is not the dryer. If no heat ? It gets complicated fast.Make sure you have nothing blocking air passage inside of vents inside. This can be where your sock went.Or a rodent made home in there.I have pulled snakes racoon babies rats you name it birds,Yes some were alive. If not that then the issue will reside with the heating source,That involves thermostats safety fuses heater coils wiring and a whole lot of hands on checking. There is a switch on the motor which limits the flow of power to the coils if proper spin speed is not achieved.Safety first Call a tech you mess with things beyond your scope you can massively fail. Pay for confidence .

Try changing your Auto Dry Level to "More" my unit seems to set it to "Medium". You may need to hold the Auto Dry Button for three seconds to unlock and change the setting.

My problem was a build up of lint in the dryer between the drum and lint filter. Probably from kids not cleaning the filter and loads of lint building up inside.

My kenmore elite also was drying less, taking longer to dry. I was able to disassemble it by checking youtube. The exit duct from the drying drum to the hose leaving the back of the dryer was full of lint. In my case this was in the front of the dryer. Now I clean it every 2 years as a maintenance task.

Its like a dishwasher. Takes a while. one thing that bugs me is that it doesn't let you do low or medium spin speed on the dry cycle. Only high or extra high. But WASH on delicate you can do low or medium spin speed. With drying it only lets me choose no spin, high, or extra high. Wish I could use medium spin speed.
