Hi, yes you can replace your optical drive with an SSD. From what you tell us about your MBP, this guide should be the one you need to follow.

Installing MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Late 2008 and Early 2009 Dual Hard Drive

You will need a caddy or enclosure to hold the SSD on the optical bay area. You need to double check if your MBP uses SATA or ATA to connect to the CD/DVD. To do so, check the hardware info about your MBP and look in both ATA and SATA tabs, the one that shows the CD-DVD will be the type of connector you will need to use.

You can use iFixit's or any other vendor's 9.5mm kit.
