Battery not charging at all? Can it be something else?

Hi,

I've an iPad 1st Gen which doesn't charge at all.

Of course I've tried different cables and chargers.

When I connect it to power, the iPad "knows" that iit should charge, because the empty battery screen changes the icon below. (if I remember correctly, it goes from "Plug-arrow-lightning" to only a lightning icon).

I left it charging more than a night (I know it requires at least 10 miinutes) on a 10W charger, but nothing changed.

Can this issue be caused by something different than a dead battery?

It could be due to a dirty, corroded dock connector, broken pins on the dock connector, or a bad power management IC as well as multiple other issues. I would suggest you try one thing at a time. The toughest part of these repairs is the trouble shooting. You also want to plug it into your computer and see if your computer recognizes it etc. Best place to start for a decent trouble shooting is a new battery. It will provide you with a known good point, and go on from there. Hope this helps, good luck.

Thanks a lot for the answer. That's exactly what I didn't want to hear. Since it would be the first time I repair a gadget, I hoped that it would be "easy" (just follow the instructions) and done. A new battery and the needed tools would already cost 3/4 of what Apple charges for the battery replacement.

But then again, if Apple replaces the battery, I suppose they don't change the other mentioned parts (although it's probable they'll replace the whole).

I think I'll have to think a lot about that.

Yes, I always hope for the easy things, but most of the time it turns out to be far more involved (and pricey). Try to clean the dock connector first, use some high grade isopropyl alcohol and see if you can clean it. Check for corroded pins, use some sort of magnifying lens to look at it. don't forget the great guides on here that can help you with your repair.

Would the iPad "know" that it's in charge if the pins were corroded?

By "know" I mean that the iPad changes the icon when I plug it in.

It could be, depending on which one of the many pins potentially has issues. It is a pretty involved connector, check the pinout on here http://pinouts.ru/PortableDevices/ipod_p...

Just to shar share my experience below.

I had my iPad working well in the past 2 years till last week I face the battery 'not charging' situation. I referred to web for other people's comment and still no way out after trying all the possible tricks.

So I decided to look for some repairing service from some small store which is specialize in repairing apple product.(not authorizes apple repairing party).

First store told me that I need to change my connector which will cost me about USD 80 with the condition to leave the iPad with them for 3 days. Concerning the data privacy, I rejected even I would like to spend the money to fix this. Later on, a lady from another repairing booth come to me that their engineer could fix it. So I took a trial.

Finally he checked the connector and it seems no problem to the connector's pin problem. He opened the case and check inside, he found the problem that there is a tiny pin inside the iPad is damaged. So the real problem is repaired with 30 min. He told me that it might caused by serious vibrate, like dropped to ground, and cause this problem, not the connector that most of people always think of if.

So, just to share with u. If u had this 'no charge' problem with many ways to fix it still no success, then u might think whether your iPad used to drop on ground. If yes, you might need to think of the above situation. Hope it helps.

Dont need the repair centre for that! Connect the ipad into your computer, then you get only one symbol (the charging lighting), you can wait a little bit and your ipad wille be recharged through the computer, this is what happened to me

On our iPad it doesn't matter the method that you connect it, it still fails to actually charge (still shows charging). Only way we have gotten ours to charge to 100% is to plug it into a charger and turn it off. After about 10-15hrs the iPad can be turned on again and you are greeted with 100% battery life. Any sooner than that and it will show less than 100%.
