Is it possible to replace a laptop dvd drive lens?

I want to upgrade my laptop's dvd drive to a blu-ray one but they don't sell blu-ray drives for my laptop model so as an alternative I want to open up my dvd drive and remove the lens and if possible replace it with a blu-ray one. Is that possible?

Sorry to say this is not possible.

You have very different technologies between the older CD/DVD Vs the BluRay. Between the lasers wave length being different you also have vastly different encoding.

If you could find a drive that would fit you still need to have the software to drive it (Apple doesn't offer it)

As the others state you'll need to use an external unit which offers the needed drivers (Mac OS-X)

Hi, this might not be the best idea as bluray operates at a different wavelengt and as so will not be compatible with the rest of the control electronics in your existing dvd drive. What kind of computer do you have? Even a laptop should have fairly standard measurements for the bay that optic drives sit in.

get a blu-ray rom, and then go out and buy a corresponding external case, that hooks up to your computer via usb... viola!! you got a blu-ray that works with your computer...

No ROM to replace, or a place to even add one. Even on a Windows system you don't need to replace the BIOS ROM to add support of a BluRay unit, you need software drivers just like Mac systems.

The Lens is not an interchangeable part between blurry and Std DVD.

If you want Blu ray accessibility and assuming your referring to a Windows machine. The best option is to buy an external blu ray drive. They are designed specifically for external use and have the drivers for the OS, they also are reasonably inexpensive compared to a few years ago. If you are using an Apple or Linux you will need to check the drive manufacturer to ensure they support your OS with corresponding drivers before you buy.
