My iphone 3gs was on the charger all day because i forgot about it but when i took it off it wouldnt turn on. When i tried to turn it on the symbol of the charger and red battery came up then after that it just wont turn on.... What could it be??

jess, this could be caused by a bad battery. It is easily possible that this battery is at the end of its lifespan, and not longer holds a charge. Replace the battery, check your cable, use another cable, and clean your dock connector with a bit of isopropyl alcohol, a soft brush, and a few puffs of compressed. I'd definitely start with that, use this guide to work on it and the battery is available right here as well as many other places. Hope this helps, good luck.
