Why do my trackpad and keyboard not work?

Starting yesterday, my trackpad has been freezing. For a while, I could get a response from the computer by using the keyboard, and eventually, the trackpad would wake up. After about an hour of use, researching the problem, the keyboard stopped working altogether. Now, I can only use the mouse, and it often stays frozen for half an hour at a time. I've read about bands underneath the battery that can get warped if the battery swells, but I can't remove the battery to try and fix those since I don't have Apple's three pronged screwdriver.

There are a lot of causes for freezing. We don't have enough history to rule out many of them (full HD, failing HD, overheating, liquid spills to name just a few) - yes swollen batteries could be the problem however that condition usually is accompanied with overheating and charging problems.

if you intend to DIY you'll have to obtain the proper tools (ever job goes easier when you use the right tool). You can get them here or elsewhere.

If there's an Apple store near you, you can take it in... Apple is very good about replacing defective batteries... even if you are slightly out of warranty.

I have since "repaired" the problem. My computer is over a year out of warranty now, so I opened it up and took a look around. I was able to loosen the screws enough to lift the battery (not remove it) and check for any obvious swelling or bumps, and clean out underneath it. I was kind of shocked at the amount of dust inside, but I suppose that's normal. I used an air duster to remove some dust from other components, re-inserted the battery and closed everything up. I didn't expect any change, but upon booting, everything worked just fine and I haven't had any problems since. I will mention that my machine does get warm but not necessarily hot. I have almost 80 gB of HD space left and it is still pretty speedy and seems to be in good health. I've never had any liquids come in contact with the computer. Like I said, she's been running great since I put the screws back in so maybe this was just a freak occurence.
