How can I get my audio back from my mac mini? No internal speaker, no headphones and no sound from external (Altec) speaker system. The mac is not overloaded with inputs and all exterior speakers, etc. are in good working order.

Is there a red light in your audio port?

By chance did you connect your system to an external speaker via Bluetooth or AirPlay? If you did you should check your settings to make sure they are correct.

I have a Jambox which I connected to my system via Bluetooth for a party once and it always tried to connect to it even when I don't have it on. I ended up pulling the config file out so it was unknown to the system to fix the problem.

Good point, and smart "fix".

Check your System Preferences->Sound settings. They may be set to "0" - or no output device. You could also try tossing ~/Library/Preferences:com.apple.systemsound.plist. When "things" (apps & settings) behave strangely it can sometimes be due to a corrupt preference (.plist) file.

As a workaround use a USB dongle. USB audio is separate from the analogue audio. These dongles typically have a microphone in addition to line in/out ports.

You can also increase the number of USB ports with a self-powered USB hub. You want a self-powered hub because simply adding a hub will draw too much power and may damage the USB port(s) you have.

For me, it was because I just added more memory to my Mac mini and either forgot to reattach (or didn't attach securely enough) the ribbon cable connecting the drive module from the rest of the circuitry. It was a pain in the @%^ to get the Mac open again but that's all it turned out to be.
