Our Sony Vaio VGN-FZ38M from 2008 shows vertical coloured lines on screen. Non of the external graphics connectors work (HDMI or RGB).
Have been told graphics card is integrated into motherboard - replacement €350
Is there any alternative, such as a USB to RGB ?

Zino, since all the graphics comes from the GPU there is no other way. You could consider a professional reflow, or replace your motherboard. Hope this helps, good luck.
