SSD to SATA or USB adapter

I'm looking for an SSD to USB adapter.

The SSD in my model is no longer the standard SATA connection. Apple changed the interface on the SSD.

The pin count on the SSD is 11+14. I need this adapter because the logic board died. I need to copy data from the SSD.

I'm looking for a device where I can copy data from one of these newer style SSD drives.

I checked with OWC they replied with the following:

"OWC Morgan G:

We are currently working on developing upgrade/replacement drives for the Late 2013 MBP w/Retina, as well as an external enclosure to house the stock Apple drive. However, at this time we do not have anything available."

Anyone else have any other suppliers I could try. This is a late 2013 model NOT 2012!

Using an adaptor is not a very good way to goOWC has the drive you need. If you have a different drive put it in an external (pocket drive) case.

An external case for Retina '13 Apple Proprietary blade SSD are now available ''according to a more recent post below.

''

If this answer is acceptable please remember to return and mark it.

I haven't been able to find the correct type of pocket drive. Any links you could share?

OWC sells a case - you have the drive. You put your drive in a case = pocket drive.

@machead: Apparently you missed the part of the original post that said, "I need this adapter because the logic board died. I need to copy data from the SSD." You know, the most important part of the post. Buying a new SSD doesn't solve the problem...

tarafından

No I don't think I missed anything. Three weeks ago he wondered who would have an internal adaptor to put a new SSD in his old MBP. An adaptor would not fit inside the laptop. I advised him to get an external case for his old SSD so that he could read from it. And pointed to a link for the machine he had identified where (with a bit of looking) he could find a case for his new SSD, and, one for the old. - For future reference you posted a Comment in the place where only Answers belong. This link is for a Pro not an air - pins are different

Oskar - The Question is about the MacBook Pro not the MacBook Air so the answer is correct. Are you looking for one to hold an MacBook Air SSD? If so create a fresh question with your details.

tarafından

That is for the 2012 Pro retina. Not for the 2013 Pro Retina which was what the original poster was wanting.

tarafından

Please read the lower post to get the full picture. You are correct this unit is for the older models, which is what the poster had and wanted to use with the newer model which is why this is confusing.

Hi Dan,

Thank you for your answer but I am not sure which link you are referring to?

This

http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/MAU3E...

or

http://eshop.macsales.com/Search/?Ntk=Pr...

Additionally I cannot find any information that one of these links refer to products that are compatible with the Macbook Pro Retina Late 2013 models.

I spoke to a sales rep of OWC and his answer was:

"OWC Duane C:

Hello doz12. I'm sorry, but we do not have anything that can help connect a retina 2013 SSD externally at this time."

So what to do because I am lost and I need my data :P

Thanks again for any input!

OWC web site is a bit confusing here. Apple converted to a M.2 PCIe SSD on the late '13 MBPr model. As such there is no hardware that is compatible yet with this model. But, the '12 and early '13 models do have an option, which is what the link was about. Now lets look at the question from a time point and read the rest of the posts. While Brian had noted his NEW system was a late '13 (PCIe based) he likely did not have this model for his broken unit (early '13 or older). So while he is implying he needs a newer PCIe case in truth he likely needs the older Apple proprietary SSD case that OWC does offer to put his older SSD unit into to copy the data onto his new system.

FYI, i have the same problem. Macbook Pro Retina (Late 2013) which had it's logic board killed by a cup of spilled tea. All the data is still on the SSD and no way to get it off.

I did see this M.2 SSD to USB adapter.... http://www.ebay.de/itm/221394861961 but not sure if that will work.

I guess i'll need to wait and purchase a new MBPr and then swap the SSD's to access the data.

tarafından

One of the issues with the M.2 spec is the looseness of the data interface (it's just the mechanical side that is spec'ed). Which is why finding compatible hardware for Apple SSD units (or SSD's) will be harder. To add to the confusion the data interface is programed into the SSD! So you could have the same exact units side by side and one will work in an Apple MBPr, iMac or Mac Pro system and the other won't (we found that out the hard way).

tarafından

Best to follow OWC site on what they are doing for the newer MB air, iMac & Mac Pro systems as they all have these newer PCIe SSD drives.

Hi Dan,

Thanks for your thorough reply. So let's wrap it up...:at this point in time there is NO hardware that can help me transfer data from my MBP Late 2013 SSD disk right?

Thanks.

Hi, I upgraded my Late-2013 rMBP SSD to a OEM Apple 1TB SSD (made by Samsung). Now, I have a 256GB SSD PCIe laying around. I would use it if There is now a compatible enclosure. I know there wasn't available yet, but I also saw that today, OWC came out with a upgrade Kit for 2013 Mac Pro SSD (I think it's the same PCIe SSD !?), so I guess they will come out soon with a enclosure too ??

Call them to find out. Let us know what you discover.

I chated with Support and they said it will be available as a Standalone Enclosure soon after the availability of the new MacPro Upgrade Kit.

If I understand, you either have A1493, A1398 or A1502 printed on the back of the machine. The card is the same for MBA models A1465 and A1466 Mid/Late 2013-2015 (there is some crossover with the earlier models of the same number). These cards use a PCI-e interface, sometimes referred to as mini PCE-e or mPCI-e, this is a different interface than all previous versions that used mSATA or SATA interfaces. This allows for faster speeds. Currently the only adapter is mPCI-e to PCI-e which would allow you to plug it into a motherboard on a desktop computer in a regular expansion slot. If you find an adapter for this newer card that goes out to SATA, I would like to know, I have been looking for one for days.

Good News! OWC now has an external case for MacBook Pro 15" Retina Late '13 SSD's. If you have an air check out the link as well as this will also support some versions of it.
