Why does my cord not charge my laptop?

I have a 17inch Mac Book Pro 85W Mag Safe power adapter that does not seem to charge my laptop anymore. Any suggestions on what the problem is and how I can fix it? Thanks in advance.

Chris, sounds to me like you may need to replace the Apple AC Adapter, or possible the power jack may be damaged. Your best bet is to start with a new adapter to see if your laptop will charge afterwards before moving on.

Do you get any lights on the adapter plug? Download and run Coconut battery to see if it is still capable of holding at least a 20% charge of original capacity. http://www.coconut-flavour.com

No lights or charging sign on the screen. If the wire is in exactly the right place the light will appear. Very clear that the wire is frayed and gets connected if positioned perfectly

You can replace the wire. Go here to get the part: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-OEM-App.... Opening the case is the hard part as it's glued together and taking it apart without destroying it is hard and requires brute force.

One of the two cables might have broken off of the pcb inside the main housing of the power adapter. The cables have crimped ends which can break due to cable-movement, causing erratic loading/not loading although the light is constantly on.

The cables in this case are the wires inside the cable from the power adapter to the macbook.

Having checked the T connector for shortcuts and found there wasn't any, I dismantled the connector and checked if the charger unit was O.K.

The multimeter showed 16,68 V.

Finally I found out that the fault was in the wall outlet, which didn't give proper contact to the charger.

So always start with the simple solution :-))
