20" intel iMac Power supply dilemma

Hello,

I have a 20" intel imac EMC 2389 and i was wondering whether the power supply cable to the motherboard is compatible with standard ATX sockets, if so my plan is to run the imac from a 12 volt source seeing as i will being using solar, and buying a generic 12v to ATX adaptor from ebay similar to this: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/DC-12V-200W-P...

I believe the power consumption of my imac is a maximum of 250w roughly (found here) . There is an issue of under supply, maybe if i removed the DVD drive that would cut it, and seeing as the display is backlit by LEDS i think the DVD dive is the last thing i can sacrifice. If the power supply cable on the mac is different to a standard ATX connection or some connection that is easy to find i am willing to splice a few cables ect. from a 12v to ATX supply to match the imac power socket Although it would be nice if anyone reading this could shed some light on the pinout as i have had little luck. Just for clarity i do not wish to use and inverter to convert 12V to 240v and then into the computer.

Some help would be great. Thanks!

Sadly, no. The power supply is a custom unit with a custom cable connection.

The power for the system needs to be stable. A direct solar setup would not offer the needed stability. You really need a battery acting as a buffer before the voltage regulator and a clean 60 Hz sine wave.

You may want to think about getting a laptop Vs a desktop system here. They are designed with battery power from the start Vs the desktop which is designed for AC power.

Thanks for the advice! i think that may be the way to go then, however i failed to make it clear that i would be using a battery in my setup to store power.

The issue is the double conversion DC to AC back to DC the desktop system would require unlike the laptop which could go directly from the DC source. Besides you would need to alter the desktop to such a point it would not be workable with a direct AC connection again or would anyone want to service it if you had a problem.

Ok. Thanks for the help!

Look online for a schematic for your model they are available for purchase.
