Logic board capacitor identification

Hi everyone,

Just disassembled the logic board off a macbook pro A1260 2008, and noticed that a component (think its a capacitor) has blown up. I believe it has shorted to the chassis.

hxjdij, you are correct. That is a capacitor and it sure looks like it got plenty of damage. Make sure that you properly identify what happened. It is absolutely possible that it was shorted out. Anyhow, it is reference designator C7530which is a 22UF 25V 20% capacitor in a D2 LF package. You may have to cross reference that by size. The one next to it, is reference designator C7532 which is a 1uF 25V 10% capacitor in a 0603 package. Both parts are available at place like Mouser.com or Digikey.com as well as many others. I am a bit at a loss as of what might have happened. All I know is that I suspected it was a VGA chip fault.. Macbook switches on but dead screen. Upon inspection I found this fault. Yeah it looks like it went off with a bang.... The solder holding it also seems to have slightly melted.

I am suspecting a direct short to chassis as its very close to it. I doubt the VGA 'balls' would short out, they usually just disconnect.Any suggestions ?

Those components are part of the 1.8V DDR2 Supply circuitry, so not sure how the "VGA Chip" would fit into that. I did check the schematic and do not see the connection.

Hmm so the DDR circuit could be the culprit ? Getting no screen display upon startup. Would a macbook not display if ram is not found ? I'll try and fix that and reply.
