I just replaced the lcd and inverter board and after 5 min of being powered on the backlight dim's and then goes black. both the lcd and the backlight inverter are new. anyone have any helpful hints on what it could be????

Looks like your "new" inverter board might be faulty. Is it really a new inverter board or a used one ? I would try to boot from another source (installation disk, external drive) to check for a software issue. I don't know what happened when you cracked the LCD, if the unit was dropped or not but in the case of a dropped unit you can't exclude the possibility of a damaged logic board too.

No it wasn't dropped, my neice was pressing on it while it was open. the backlight was still opperational while it was cracked. I got a new inverter board with the lcd so I swapped it. here's the thing, I tried reinstalling the old one and it's doing the same thing. Boot's up, goes to the front page, dim's after 5 min, then the backlight shut's down. I even tried resetting the display with command,option p and r, and letting it chime 3 times. it does seem like the inverter board but this one is new, it's still very possible it could be bad, the old one stay's on a little longer than the new one. weird!!!!!
Could you also try to do a SMC reset:

Could you also boot the MB from another source than your internal drive and check if the issue persists ?

Hook up to an external monitor to test the GPU. Wait ten minutes to see if it goes black. Why did you replace the lcd & inverter? What was happening?

The Lcd was cracked. the screen is still up and running but the backlight isn't. if I hook an external monitor the external works fine.
