Audio does not work

Hi,

The audio is grayed out in the preferences. I tried plugging in headphones, and external speakers (tested and worked fine on another mac) but they do not show up.

I have updated the system to the most current. I also Zapped PRAM hoping that would fix the problem.

I took it to Apple support and they want to replace the Logic Board. The computer works fine but no Audio.

Any suggestions? I bought it used for $420, and the logic board is around $250.

I saw this http://www.applecomponents.com/items/922...

would that work?

Thanks,

Paul

If they want you to replace your logic board, that probably means that the integrated sound card fried. So, you can try using a USB one! Some speakers already have a USB connection in with a built in sound card, but you can also get them here, make sure its Mac Compatible!

Greyed out speakers may mean that the sound out is "locked" in optical mode. This can happen even if you never used the optical mode.

Try put a ordinary audio plug in the sound out connection. Rotate and carefully move it in/out, left/right.

A total reinstallation of the system may help too.

Otherwise one may use a USB sound gadget. There are some fairly cheap ones on the market. Changing the motherboard seems a little bit over the hill...

If you have been inside the Mac Mini for any reason, then there is the possibility that the ZIF cable from the audio board is not properly seated. If this is the case, you get the exact same symptoms you have described.

To quote GaryObrien:

"Steps 7 and 8 in the Audio Board install (Installing Mac mini Model A1176 Audio Board) are where the solution lies.

There is a painted line on the ZIF cable. Before you close the cable lock, make sure the cable is fully inserted - the painted line will be about 1mm above and parallel to the top of the socket. Push down the clip and all should be well."
