Device seems to be working internally, but the screen won't turn on?

My iPod Nano 7th Gen went through the wash and dryer. I placed it in rice for several weeks before charging it and attempting to turn it on. After doing this, the screen wouldn't turn on. When it's plugged into the computer, iTunes recognizes the iPod and shows what songs are on it. When I hold the Sleep/Wake and Home button, the computer recognizes that I've reset the iPod. This makes me think that the water damage only damaged the screen, because the buttons are working, and iTunes seems to be able to add and remove songs from the device. Would it be beneficial to try replacing the screen? Would this fix the problem, or should I assume the water damage has ruined more than just the screen?

Anything further. I have decided it is the LCD portion, not the digitizer/glass screen. Mine only went through the washer so it seems only water damage. And when I tried turning it on after letting it "dry" for several hours, there was a flash of the original screen and then blank. I can see the iPod in my iTunes, I can sync to it - and as the screen itself is okay, no cracks, etc, am assuming it is the LCD digitizer. We'll see, I will order the part and give it a whirl. 2015-07-23

Why do people put their phones in rice? Is it a "Chinese" thing ??

@milemarker490 No. It is to help absorb the water in the device.

good to know i am not the only person in the world who accidently washed their ipod nano.

But i still have not found an answer to fix it, sounds like i need to bring it in the apple for repairs.

I washed mine months ago, and let it dry out for weeks before trying to charge it and turn it on with no luck! (I even gave it to my brother to give to his friend for parts, but he forgot and gave it back to me last week.) I plugged it in today and to my surprise the computer recognized it and was able to sync like normal! So, I got to googling and “reset” it by holding the home and power button for 15 seconds. I did this twice, but it still didn’t turn on the display, but it lit up when I plugged it in! I’m still messing with it, but totally hoping it’ll work like it did before!

It is totally beyond me why people put there wet devices in rice. Its a total myth that DOESN'T WORK! As for leaving the device to dry out you're basically killing it even more than the liquid ever would by allowing corrosion onto the board. If it gets wet open it straight away or even better take it to a shop to have it stripped out, dried and cleaned properly.

90% of the time, in cases like you described, the LCD has just blown and a replacement will fix it. Just when removing the old one, check the connector on the iPod itself for any signs of rust. Potentially even clean with isopropyl alcohol. Whilst at it, it may be a good ides to clean all connectors and potentially prevent further corrosion

Do not charge it for a while and whilst the screen is broke, don’t keep pressing the buttons as this only increases the risk of further damage.

But I’d definitely recommend trying a new screen! Good Luck👍

Steps to fix-

If you see the Apple logo or a red or blue screen during startup, try these steps:

Connect your iPod touch to a computer. On a Mac with macOS Catalina, open the Finder. On a Mac with macOS Mojave or earlier, or on a PC, open iTunes. Find out which macOS your Mac is using.

Locate your device on your computer.

While your device is connected, follow these steps:

Press and hold both the top button and volume down button.

An iPod touch with arrows pointing to the top button and the volume down button.

An iPod touch with arrows pointing to the Home button and the top button.

Keep holding the buttons until you see the recovery mode screen.

An iPod touch showing the restore screen.

When you get the option to restore or update, choose Update.

A Finder window showing a prompt with the choice to update or restore your iPod touch. Update is selected.

Your computer will download the software for your device. If it takes more than 15 minutes, your iPod touch will exit recovery mode. Repeat steps 2-4.

This may help you,
