How do I open up a Mighty Mouse?

How do I open up a Mighty Mouse? I got one that can only scroll in one direction.

Update

Thanks guys.

I've just took one apart.

It seems easier than the old Apple pro mouse.

Scrolling works perfectly after clearing out all the dirt around the rollers.

Didn't try the upside down cloth method, as I was looking for a excuse to see the guts of the mighty mouse.

Actually, a Mighty Mouse can get more gunked up than the turn-it-upside-down-and-roll-it technique can fix. I've taken two apart and found the little plastic rollers, that the pea abuts, get fuzz and stuff wound around them just like the good old roller-ball mice used to.

Here's a pretty good YouTube video with instructions:

I reassembled the mice, using little dabs of glue, but didn't bother reinstalling the plastic ring; hopefully that'll make it easier to take them apart the next time.

Take a pad with rubbing alcohol and rub the ball thoroughly, as there might be some debris and dirt caught under it prohibiting it from moving. Otherwise http://www.mightymouserepair.com has a guide or my personal favorite...

good luck!

This is all good to know, since I do regular maintenance not only on my own machines but on those of friends. I recently was told that opening a Mighty Mouse can't be done without breaking it but I've just found the ifixit take-apart page and it looks like with some care, it might be possible. I'm tempted also to experiment with using a solvent to separate the glue-joints. Has anyone else tried this yet?

Last thing: for the record, Ptr702's link to <http://www.mightymouserepair.com> now triggers a credit score pop-up and gives a page saying the domain name has expired. It's just ads and garbage now. Is there another link for a take-apart video that works?

Ummm, the 2 links posted are pretty useless: one leads to a chinese language site, and the other is just plain broken. Perhaps the original poster might want to update the links.

I've had very good luck using a high-nap towel or microfiber cloth and a little cleaning solution to fix this issue:

1. Dampen one section of the towel or cloth with some iKlear, windex, or water. You want a slightly damp area and a dry area.

2. place the towel on a hard level surface, turn the mouse upside down and roll the scroll ball vigorously in all directions for several minutes, alternating between the damp and dry areas.

3. Test for restored function, repeat as necessary.

BTW: I've taken a few completely failed mighty mice apart, but the newer ones have plastic weld tabs on the bottom ring, making it almost impossible to reassemble the device in a working manner - the ring is the gliding contact point for the bottom of the mouse, so it has to be level and firmly attached.

I used the upside down method and it works like new! Nice tip.

nice job, I know you have fixed it, but next time try this:

1. get a thick WHITE paper, thickest you can find

2. put the paper somewhere stable

3. put the scroll ball (gray ball) on it (holding the mouse opposite-down)

4. move it around with pressure in different direction for a minute.

5. SORTED

Or just spray some compressed air at the trackball.

Sometimes the compressed air or upside-down-rolling might help, but if you've ever taken one of these apart AFTER unsuccessfully trying those methods, you will see why. The rollers get greasy fuzz wrapped around them and no amount of rolling or spraying is going to get that off.

I deal with a newspaper with 49 mice in use at any one time, and I know whereof I speak.

if you clean it on the white paper you have a good result the first time but you will damage it doing it several times... my old mighty mouse doesn't work because the scrolling ball has damaged a little piece of plastic inside the mouse.

my second mouse works perfectly since 2008 because every 5/6 months i open it and clean the internal parts just with my fingers, without alcohol or other stuffs... every time i need to break the lower side with a cutter but i always fix it with glue when i finish to clean...

one more important thing: i'm not an hygienie maniac but it's better to use the scroll with extremely clean hands... i'm not a doctor but i think that the dirty inside my mouse is my dead skin with dust...

so always clean hands and if you can cover the mouse when not in use...

My advice: Don't take the mouse apart. It's not worth the effort. Just get disinfectant wipes and use lots of those to clean the mouse, including the little ball of course, very thoroughly, and the whole case and maybe the cable. Clean the underside too, but NOT the sensor or laser emitter. Use compressed air or a camera cleaning blower (they work very well) and blow out the dust on the optical parts. Use a Q-tip (that you soften up a little against your shirt) to remove more dust and grime, but no alcohol or any other chemicals. Use the blower or compressed air to remove the remaining dust. The mouse will probably be as good as new.
