8MP Camera Lens Broke Broken Replacement

I cracked and broke the camera lens on my EVO 4G.

I have the insurance, however they never told me when I bought the phone that the insurance deductible is $100. So I'd like to try and fix it myself.

Where can I find the parts for it? Is this something that a Sprint service center can help me with?

Thank you for all your replies.

YES, I do plan to make the protective camera glass piece.

As of Friday I obtained a sample of borosilicate glass.

I will attempt to make the protective camera glass this week.

As well a sample of the tape used to hold the glass in place since this will be necessary for proper installation of the glass.

Please be patient as I have a day job and this will take a little bit of experimenting to deliver a complete solution that I hope will overcome the design flaw of the original product.

Thanks You

there are 2 sellers on ebay - but the lens is part of the rear housing and they only sell it in a "housing package" for 142$ and 150$

since you cant get the part alone - i recommend you to go to sprint and simply ask them, it should be cheaper than the ~150$ you would have to pay on ebay for the parts

Mine broke too, and mine is in a rubberized case that completely protects the phone. I dont know how this happened. I wonder if this is a problem with the EVO's. I dont know why they would put such a shi**y piece of glass to cover one of the most advertised parts of the phone.

that could be a "design flaw" - there were many devices in the past that had those issues - think about the ipod's - scratches all over - it seems like the get scratches from looking at them

I'd pay $20, but I'd first want to see a YouTube video of the one you made and how you install it onto your EVO.

I too, just found a bad crack on my babied EVO. Never been dropped, always laid down flat on the main screen. Tried to take a photo and it was blurry, etc.

I would GLADLY pay more than 20 dollars to fix this.

Well count me in as well. I treat this phone better than anything I have and I was cleaning it and looked and there was the broken lens. This must be really delicate. And why have it protrude out of the rest of the case so it is especially vulnerable? Yup Ill buy one too.

Well, mine broke after 11 days too, and like all the others i took extra care, so i went to best buy where i bought it from no help, Sprint were also no help & htc no help!!, so in best buy i pulled the security mount of the display model, pryed open the glued down back and popped of the red alloy part with the lens in, and there we have new lens, as the dummy is only ever gonna go in the trash. Job done.

Yes, Ebay has the replacement back for $20 and free shipping. You'll need to remove the outer housing and disassemble the inside. It will replace the kickstand and camera lens cover. I would then proceed to consider modifying the lens cover from the damaged portion with a better quality glass, though that seems unlikely (and probably more expensive than it's worth,) considering how exact you would have to make it, and the trouble finding a source that could properly construct it at a reasonable cost.

$20 is an easy solution.

PS: It's fairly possible that, considering how weak the lens cover (because it's really not an actual lens, rather it's like calling a polarizer filter a lens when it's just a piece of glass that protects or filters various lighting elements, with absolutely no effect on the form of the subject shape or size,) that people are actually bumping into stuff while it's in their pocket, and they don't realize it. It also seems to be possible that those that have blurred images may actually have damaged the camera lens itself, as otherwise the cracked lens cover doesn't seem to affect the image quality. I could be completely wrong as to whether the camera lens cover acts as a lens that is necessary to focus the image, if in fact the camera gets blurry without it. To prevent further damage though, I would definitely want to preserve the camera lens (it works as well as my Konica-Minolta Dimage 200 (though without the telephoto. . . Don't confuse digital zoom with optical as they are totally different things.)

Are people suggesting that temperature conditions caused it to crack? That the large metal ring somehow contracted and expanded, causing the plastic---which should be flexible, though maybe it does--crack?

I would be curious to try the micro and macro lens adapters though certainly will pass on gluing them to the phone. . .

And for those calling it a $200 camera. . . It most certainly isn't, even if it's what you paid for it. Normally something like this costs much more to produce, and whatever service provider (Sprint?) ends up paying HTC the difference in what you bought it for, because they want you to sign a contract which gives them more than $1500 over the next two years.

Same with game systems. . . You buy something that is often produced at a higher cost at the beginning of production sold to you cheaply, and it's assumed you will buy games over the next several years that will give game producer's royalties to the system designer, as well as whatever else in accessories bought. It's not a cheap phone though I do question their cheap lens cover. . . It should have been as durable as the front glass, and it clearly isn't. . .

I have the htc evo 4g and was disappointed in the clearness of the lense cover getting blurry from scratches so i took it off and cut out a clear soda bottle and replaced it with that, scratch all you want and get another bottle.

I am fairly certain that this is due to temperature changes. Mine broke while I was taking pictures of a campfire. This is most certainly a design flaw, temperature changes should definitely have been considered when someone decided to put a metal ring around a glass disc... These two materials expand and contract at very different rates.

same thing happened to me... but after reading posts here that suggested it wasnt' actually a lens, but rather a glass cover, I just went in with a tiny screw driver and popped the little glass cover and surrounding ring off. works great without it.

now just to find a way to protect the lens
