there are many ways to get it work again (at least to try to)

the best way is this:

Turn off the camera. Place it on the back with the lens facing up and take a look at the spacing between the lens and the lens housing. If you notice that the gap is not even all the way around the lens, the problem should be easy to fix. This type of a problem usually occurs if the camera was dropped while the lens was extended. Simply - VERY GENTLY - press down the lens on the side where the gap is the biggest. You should hear a “click” as it pops back into place. Try powering the camera back on.

i've found it on the net, here is the original text - if that won't help - go to the source page and read about the other options

Thank you so much, my son was using my Powershot A2300 when this happened and he felt bad in case he had wrecked m camera. All fixed now after I followed your directions. Much appreciated :-)

Very gently but FIRMLY, I felt like I might break it but after snapping the lens in place twice it works again. thank you, Markus!

I gently pressed on the lens and added fresh batteries and voila! it worked. Thank you so much. My Camera is old but I love it. Thanks again for your quick answer.

I, not so gently, pushed the lens back in on your advice. I had to try a few times and turned it on and off a bunch of times to try to have the camera assist in the retraction. I definitely heard some type of click or clunk. Camera works fine!!!!!!

Perfect. Thanks!

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Unfortunately, many cameras that fall prey to this can only be corrected by professional repair. But, here are some things that you can do that may correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try.

I have tried everything, but nothing works. I even tried to disassemble the camera, which was quite easy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4PGAbyJz...), but the lens and CCD is one compact unit.

So one day I will do it again and go even futher and also disassemble the lens, with a big chance not comming back safe and a very small chance that I can fix it.

“If lens is stuck pushed down too hard”

Look at your camera if lens is stuck. put the camera lens side up, look at the difference between sides, and GENTLY push down on the side that is higher than the other.

I have a SD 1000 but the lens looks even all the way around. I tried pushing all the way around but no click and it still won't retract.
